Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Open Question

I have an kenmore coldspot, approx. 10 yrs old. Recently the fridge quit cooling properly and the freezer doesn't seem to be as cold as it used to be. I cleaned the coils from front and back and the lights work. There doesn't seem to be any "refrigerator noises", like fan noises, once in a while a popping noise will occur. I don't notice any frost build-up. I moved the temp dials to the coldest setting, didn't make a difference. The fridge is a kenmore coldspot, model # 10670102001, ser. # EK4622859, type C21TFA95. Any help will be appreciated. Joe

SOURCE: Water dripping from top of fridge (coil housing?) under freezer.

It could well just need defrosting. It does sound as though the coil in the freezer section is frozen. If you try defrosting it and the problem disappears then you have at least found a temporary solution. If it does rectify it I would closely monitor the cabinet for a couple of weeks to check for a reoccurrence. If it does reoccur then I would suggest contacting a fridge guy so that he can check the defrost circuit. The reason we normally suggest to defrost is incase a door was left ajar and the coil froze up because of this. I hope this is of some help and you seem to be on the right track.

SOURCE: 5 year old Maytag Wide by Side Refrigerator side not cooling

Same issue with my 6 yr old Maytag side-by-side model #MSD2756GEW. Turned out it was caused by a faulty circuit board. This circuit board is located in the upper right fridge section. Apparently these boards are sensitive to power surges (which we have here in central Texas from time to time.) When the circuit board is fried, it makes a noise like a fan blade malfunctioning and it stops the auto defrost feature in the freezer from working. So the freezer ices up at the back, and the ice prevents the cold air from reaching the fridge section.

Our circuit board (which we thought was a fan) made ominous noises for a few months. (The noise would last only a minute or so and stop shortly after we opened a door). Eventually we noticed that the fridge wasn't as cold and the freezer had snow in it. Finally the board stopped making noise and about a week or so afterward we noticed that the milk had spoiled and the fridge wasn't very cold. The food in the freezer side pretty solidly frozen, thankfully.

In addition to replacing the circuit board, the fridge had to be de-iced or it would not work properly. I put it all frozen into a large camping cooler where it stayed for several hours. I opened the freezer doors and put table fan and pointed a hobby light which gets quite hot, at the back of the freezer. Within 3 hours, the ice had melted significantly so I could see through the grate at the back of the freezer. This really great technician named Tracy, made a special trip to the parts store to get the circuit board and came back within a couple hours, bringing with him a steamer. He removed the back panel inside the freezer section (the coils are behind there) and used the steamer to melt the rest of the ice before he left.

Tracey, who works for a local appliance repair company, told me that about 4 years ago, Maytag started making their fridges with built-in surge protection, so the circuit boards apparently don't get fried on the newer models as they do on my 6 yr old model. He recommended that we put plug the fridge into a heavy-duty surge protector - which we are definitely going to do.

SOURCE: Water dripping from top of fridge (coil housing?) under freezer.

I HAD LEFT THE DOOR AJAR ON MY KENMORE DPOUBLE DOOR WITH TOP FREEZER AND IT FROZE UP NOT ALLOWING THE WATER FROM THE NORMAL AUTOMATIC DEFROSTING PROCESS TO GO DOWN THROUGH ITS NORMAL DRAIN. THE ACCUMULATED WATER THEN DRIPPED INTO THE REFRIGERATOR UNDER THE FREEZER AND HAD TO BE SOAKED UP DAILY. THE SOLUTION--I REMOVED THE ADJUSTABLE
THATBOTTOM PLATE HAD AN UPWARD CURVED PORTION AT THE REAR. WHEN RE-MOVED, YOU COULD SEE FROZEN ICE ACROSS THE BACK UNDER THE VERTICAL COVER THAT COVERS COILS(?).
IN THE FAR BACK BOTTOM THERE WAS A FULL LENGTH, APPROX 1 1/2" WIDE DRAIN AREA WITH A HOLE IN THE CENTER THAT WAS PLUGGED WITH ICE.THAT WAS PREVENTING THE NORMAL DRAINING PROCESS.
A HAIR DRYER AND ABOUT 15 MINUTES MELTED THE PLUG, I THEN POURED A GLASS OF HOT WATER INTO THE HOLE AND IT DRAINED RIGHT DOWN LIKE IT SHOULD.
I HAD THE SAME FREEZE UP & DRIPPING PROBLEM A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND IT COST ME $100 FOR A SERVICE MAN TO FIX IT BUT IT'S REALLY A SIMPLE PROCESS TO FIX.

Refrigerator not cool, freezer ok

Either the freezer continues to freeze up (most likely due to low refrigerant, due to a leak), or there is an obstruction between the freezer and the refrigerator (refrigerators get their cooling from the freezer).

Given that it works after you defrost it, I'm going with low gas. Call a professional to see if the leak can be fixed. If the unit is more than 10 years old, just get a new one.

My refrigerator does not cool properly. The freezer does not have ice built up and the fan is working, I can here it blowing when i open the freezer. The freezer almost works too well, it is at its lowest...

The lowest setting in the freezer compartment may be set to cold holding back cooling to the refrigerator. Try your settings at mid-point on both refrigerator and freezer settings.
