Question about Canon CanoScan 8400F Film Scanner

Cannot select Negative film source

I have a brand new iMac and a CanoScan 8400f. I have installed the latest drivers yet when I go to where I used to be able to 'Select Source' and choose Negative or Positive rather than the usual Color/Grayscale/Black & White etc..
This option is not appearing any more. Any ideas? This is kinda urgent!

If you're using Mac OS X 10.5.x, you definitely need a new driver. Download here.

For Mac or Windows, if film is not an option in the dropdown, then most likely the Film Adapter Unit (Scanner Lid) is not being detected. Check the connection on the back. Make sure the cable going from the lid to the base of the scanner is secure.

I wrestled with this same issue for a couple of days, but finally found the solution! The black cable that comes out of the lid actually gets plugged into the back of the scanner next to the USB input and the power input. Then make sure you open the lid and find the black tab that keeps the white foam sheet in place and pop it out, exposing the light source inside the scanner lid. Insert a tray and you should be in business!

My canoscan 8400F suddenly stopped working last week. I had been scanning slides thru Photoshop when on my next scan attempt, I got this message: Cannon scan for these reasons: -The original may not...

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured

How do i scan film on my scanner

You should be able to download the manual.

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=10242

To scan film, you'll need to first remove the white cover on the underside of the scanner lid. That is where the backlight is. Also, you must be using the ScanGear driver and NOT the WIA driver. The WIA driver does not support film scanning. Locate your film guides. These are the templates that will hold the film and are placed on the scanner glass to be scanned. Lastly, there should be a Select Source option in the scanner driver that allows you to select Film as the source.

Hope this helps.

CanoScan 8400F

Try this:

Open the CanoScan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left.
If the error still occurs, then most likely it will be a service issue.

One thing to check...see if the inside lamp illuminates when you turn the scanner on using the power button at the back left side of the scanner.

Cannot scan film and slides

Check the cable that connects to the lid of the scanner. If it is disconnected, you won't get the Film options.
