Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

The fan unit on top of the outdoor condensor unit is not coming on. The pump is running when turned on, but sounds as if it releases pressure as soon as the power is shut off.

If the fan is not running on top, it will take just a few minutes and the compressor will overheat and the relief valve in the compressor will release. Sounds like your motor is no good or there is some wiring off inside the unit, or the motor capacitor could be shorted or open. You will need to take the side panel to the electrical off and look. If you are not mechanical and are afraid of electricity you may want to call a tech out. Otherwise, be sure to pull the fuses or shut the power off to the outdoor unit before inspectiing.

How to troubleshoot thermostat wiring?

I'm not sure if the thermostat is wired correctly. First, the thermostat is wired directly to the outdoor unit (compressor/condenser unit). It is NOT directly connected to the indoor unit. It connects to a low voltage control panel in the outdoor unit that sends a signal to your indoor fan/evaporator. This wire is called the fan relay switch and physically runs between the low voltage controls of the indoor and outdoor units. If the fan relay is bad it's possible that the unit runs continuously. To prevent destroying your outdoor unit there is a safety feature that prevents the indoor fan from shutting down while the outdoor unit is running. If the indoor fan did shut down while the outdoor unit was running than you would slug your compressor. That is, your compressor normally sees refrigerant gas but is instead seeing refrigerant liquid. That would not be good since this scenario would destroy your compressor. It sounds like a faulty fan relay. The actual contactor portion of the relay is in the outdoor unit.

Where is reset button on my outside a/c unit

If you are talking about the condensor that sits outside, there are high pressure and low pressure devices that have a red button on the top of them, turn off power and push the button. They are sometines located inside the unit under the fan. Generally there are none and the unit has internal overloads that kick it out. they reset themselves after the compressor cools down. If it resets after cooling down then ask yourself why it got hot. use a hose and clean the coils around the unit.sometimes helps. make sure fan is running on the condensor outside. It should come on first.

How soon after replacing the condensor fan, is it supposed to kick on?

Condensor fan should start when the compressor starts. If the condensor is hot at top and bottom, turn the refrig off and check the fan for power, should spin freely by finger, and coast to a stop.
Good Luck,

Hi,
If you are cool inside and the fan is not running then you are ok... I would however turn the temps. up a bit to eliminate more stress then necessary...
I am surprised that the fan is not working and you are still cooling though.
Was it a windy day? on a still day it may not work...
Are you sure the compressor was running but the fan not???
Some outdoor units do have switches that will turn off the fan if the head pressures are too low if the air temps. are low...

Indoor fan blowing cold air when on heating

The indoor fan will continue to run. When heat pump goes into defrost the outdoor fan stops, the reversing valve switches and the unit is basically working in the cooling mode. In order for you not to feel a blast of cold air in the winter the electric strip heat also comes on so the indoor fan must run while the strip heaters are on.

Fujitsu Outdoor Unit AOT90TP has error code E:OE = Outdoor High Pressure abnormal. Heating will not work, any ideas on what needs to be done to fix/what problem is?

Hi, and yes, when you have a high head pressure, either the outdoor fan is not running or the coil around the unit is very dirty and can not give off heat. To fix this if the fan motor is up and running like it should, shut off power to the outdoor unit. Take your water hose and start washing out the coil around the unit to remove all of the dirt. Be carful not to use to much pressure as you will flatten the aluminum fins on the unit. Turn the power back on and you should be back in service. Now if the motor is slow, dragging and not up to a good speed and moving a lot of air out of the top, then I would have the condenser fan motor replaced. Foe a tech to come out and change it, you are looking at around $150.00 dollars. I hope this has been of help to you.
Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

Fan works but condenser does not kick on

You air handler and condensor run off of two seperate circuit breakers. They share the same control voltage source. With the air handler responding to the thermostat setting, we know you have control voltage. You either have a problem with the line voltage at your condensor or something is happening in the control. Check your circuit breakers and/or fuses to your outdoor unit. Also, look for a red button near the area where the refrigeration pipes enter your condensing unit. Push the red button. If it starts to run, your unit went out on High Head Pressure. A dirty air filter this time of year can cause head pressure problems in the heat cycle (assuming this is a heat pump). Also check for cleanliness of the condensor coil and ensure proper operation of the outdoor fan motor.
There are a couple of components inside the condensor that could prevent it from running. One is the contactor. If the contacts are pitted or if a bug crawled in between them, it will prevent the unit from running. Another component is the Dual Run Capacitor. If this fails, it could prevent operation of your outdoor fan and compressor. Don't forget to check all your wires and connections. Always shut off all power prior to reaching into the electrical compartment.
I hope you find this to be very helpful moving forward. :-)

Outside fan does not spin and a loud screeching sound coming from

Hey there, sounds like the bearings seized in your fan motor. You need to replace the fan motor. If the compressor runs without the fan, th pressures build up and if they reach an extreme point, the compressor will bypass internally, creating a loud sound as the high pressure is released to the low pressure side. I would turn the thermostat on and stand by the outdoor unit as it start. Leave the disconnect on the wall readily available so you can quickly turn it off. If the compressor sounds ok when it starts up and runs for a couple seconds, turn it off right away and replace the fan motor and you should be good to go. If the compressor sounds bad or real noisy immediately at start up, the fan motor not working killed your compreesor. You would need a motor and compressor, might as well replace the unit at this point if you are paying to have it done. Let me know if you need anything else

Airconditioner LG LSk181-N2 shutting off

Sounds like your aircon is stuck on heating mode. Or. The outdoor fan speed is affected by ambient temperature, or low refrigerant. In heating mode the indoor fan will come on for a while to sense temperature and will then wait for the outdoor unit to pump up pressure and build up heat.
