The cartridges might not be moving back to there rest stop correctly, check the sponge to the far right Also The clear plastic strip running behind the carriage could be damaged or dirty. this strip tells the printer where the carriage is and if it can not read it, it will cause that message.
Hope this helps

Any malfunctions its gives error 'E'... Check paper jam, carriage struck, cartridges faulty and service related issues.checking carriage:Switch on the machine check carriage(the unit carrying print heads)moving left & right.. if its not moving, it might be struck in service station(service station located at right end and its allow carriage to rest on it during shut down as well as its cleans the print head nozzles). power the machine pull carriage out gently, don't force it..Clean encoder strip: Encoder is located back side of the carriage and its guides carriage to move properly, if encoder became dirty you will get error message, clean encoder with smooth cotton cloth.

If you are getting a 'carriage jam' error as soon as you turn on your printer with no tasks in progress, then check for any piece of paper stuck in the carriage. Remove the paper carefully. If the paper tears, part of it might remain inside the paper path and damage the product.

Follow the steps for fix HP Printer Carriage Jam

  • Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
  • Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
  • Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

I turned my printer on and it said open door. clear cariage jam then press enter what is that?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

with the indulgence of mackenzie123...

A 'Carriage Jam" error indicates that the holder of the ink cartridges (called carriage) which includes the print head cannot move or complete its sideways movement. Three (3) possibilities:
  • it is really jammed. Paper debris is blocking its path and therefore must be cleaned;
  • the guide rod / rail has lost / dried up its lubricant and therefore the carriage could not move easily. The guide rod/rail as the name implies is the provides the path of motion;
  • ink smears on the encoder strip. The encoder strip is the long narrow plastic with barcode like markings. This tells the carriage where it is. An ink smear would block the markings and confuses the carriage.
Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa..

How to Clear carriage jam on HP PSC 1610 Printer? No obvious paper jam visible.

Dear it's the carriage jam error. so it mean that your carriage is jam not paper. so open the printer where you insert the cartridge. check whether it is jam or what . cartridge carrier is jam kindly turn off the printer and try to move the cartridge head by hand very gently and if seems to be stuck than check for anything which abort him to move freely so than might be anything like dust or else. when you get success in moving the head put some machine lubricant on the rod on which head moves and check it ok.

HP PSC 2210 keeps complaining about paper jam. There is no paper jam!

For carriage jam try these steps

Remove both the ink cartridges from the All-In-One. also all the papars in the tray
Unplug the power cord from the All-In-One as well as the power outlet.
Now move the carriage (carriage is the one which holds the cartridge) Too and Fro till you feel the carriage is moving smoothly.
Then insert the cartridges close the access door.
Plug the power cord directly to a wall outlet without surg protector.
Before connecting the power cord to the All-In-One press and hold the # and no 6 button and then insert the power cord, do not release the keys
until you see a message a reset (if the screen goes blank then release the keys and turn the power on)
Now try printing a test page or make a copy

Good Luck

Carriage is jam, black is in the wrong place

I have had frequent "carriage jam" messages from my HP 2355. I would open the lid, move the carriage back and forth many times, unplug it and then restart it, and eventually it would start printing again. Today, however, this did not work.

I resolved to either fix it, break it or throw the printer away. Lucky for me, I finally found the root cause of my problem.

Under the spot where the cartridges "park", there is a platfrom that has a few wipers on it. Mine was covered with old, dried ink. I discovered that this platform is supposed to move, front to back.

Mine would barely move. So, after pushing the carriage out of the way to the left, I pushed this platform toward the rear of the machine and then sprayed the area judiciously with Simple Green. Then, I used an old toothbush and paper towel to clean the sliding surface and generally removed crud from it. Latex gloves are highly recommended!

After this, I moved the platform back and forth and continued cleaning until it moved smoothly and easily. It solved the problem and the printer does not need to take up landfill space!
