Hi John
Can be because of a couple of things. Normally it is a system error.

If you boot your mac up from your original OS installation disk you might be able to repair the fault with apples disk utility.

Failing that you'll have to re-install the OS.

My pc takes forver to come up. It is loading too many progams and i don't know how to stop them from loading at start up.

If u dont want all the programs to load up when the notebook is booting to the desktop then u can follow these steps which will reduce the time taken by the notebook to boot up-->click on the "Start" option-->u will get a search box just above the start option-->type "msconfig" in the search box & an option of msconfig will appear-->click on that option-->a window of "system configuration" will come up-->click on the tab which reflects "startup"-->now under this tab u will get the list of programs which load up while ur notebook is booting-->so barring a few programs which u need to load while the notebook is loading, u can uncheck the other programs-->unchecking these programs will reduce the boot up time of notebook-->but this doesn't mean that u wont be able to use the disabled programs-->u can double click on the desktop shortcut of the program to start the program, the only thing is that the program will take more than the usual time to load up as it didnt load up at the time of booting-->then click on apply & OK, the booting speed of ur notebook will increase... Note: Do not do any changes in the "services" option as it might damage ur notebook,,,

Start by doing a system restore, then, if that doesn't work, run a repair with your recovery or operating system disc.

Can't see the desktop screen after booting up. It's dark.

Load windows in safe mode by pressing F8 once it starts to load and selecting the 'safe mode' option. Once inside windows change your desktop resolution to something like 800X600 to keep it safe. Shut down and boot up properly, should load your desktop.

Desktop won't open

try to start in safe mode by pressing f8 during boot-up, then choose the administrator account and let windows load in safe mode. if you're able to load up to your desktop, restart your pc and log-in as you would normally do.
hope this helps!

No icons..nothing!?!

Try resetting the desktop. Right click on the desktop, click properties, then open the desktop tab. Change the desktop picture and see if that works. If it doesn't try a system restore. You will be able to access the start menu by pressing the windows key. If these don't work you'll need to run a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc.

Desktop problem

Sounds like there is a program trying to run that is locking up your computer. what was the last program you installed?

If you know, when booting up, press F8 and go into safe mode. Uninstall that program. then reboot normally.

If this does not work, you may have a virus.

Lets start with this first though.
