Hi John
Can be because of a couple of things. Normally it is a system error.

If you boot your mac up from your original OS installation disk you might be able to repair the fault with apples disk utility.

Failing that you'll have to re-install the OS.

Start by doing a system restore, then, if that doesn't work, run a repair with your recovery or operating system disc.

Insert your Leopard OS disc and startup your mac while holding down the C key to have it startup using the OS on the disk. When it's loaded, DONT do the install, but go to the desktop menu and launch Disk Utilities and do a disk repair and permissions repair... you should see a good improvement on startup

Cd slot not responding

1. Restart your machine.
2. Make sure all software is updated
3. If it's not loading properly, try inserting a little bit at a time by tapping the side of the disc with a finger...
4. If it's loading the physical disc and not showing on the desktop, it may be the disc is incompatible...
5. If you can't get it to respond to the Eject key, try pressing "Command", and "E" simultaneously.
If no response, you may have a bad drive, or poor connection of the cable to the drive...

Issues loading software on powerbook G4

Try using the finder to locate your software packages and simply relocate their icons to the applications folder by opening several new finder windows and dragging and dropping them there.

If you, in fact, went through each application's setup, then the icons were created somewhere on the disk, perhaps on the desktop or even above the desktop, external to the particular user.

Try locating each package back to the applications folder.

Have you tried to boot to the factory disks???? If not try to boot from Disk 1 and press and hold the C button on power up and if you get to the screen that asks for language. If this boots up to that point it appears you have an OS issues and you can do an archieve install which will allow you to keep your old users and settings let me know if you get to this point.

The most likely cause is a bad hard drive or a corrupted file. Start up the computer in safe mode. (Hold down the shift key while starting) that will force the macbook to run extended tests on the startup drive. If it finds any errors it may be able to correct them. If that fails use the startup disk that came with your laptop and start from it (hold down the C key during start up) that will allow you to use disc utility to try repairing your hard drive.
If the macbook fails to boot to the DVD or into safe mode. Try reseating the RAM chips. Hope some of that helps.

Here are a few things that might help you
Try to start your computerfrom the system CD, if this fails, you may try to start it from theDisk Warrior CD, if this won't work also, I would check the PRAM.
