On switch won't stay in 'on' position.

same here... first problem we've had with the vacuum... very disappointing.

I have a Dyson slim and it has the same problem...very annoying and tape does not seem to work at all....

It could be a little more difficult than els1005 indicates. Also likely it is not stuck in the "on" position, but the toggle switch wire (a tiny little metal wire like a mini paperclip) has come "unfixed" from it's position within the switch housing. That little wire is bent in such a way that when you press down on the switch, it goes through a series of gates to clip and hold the switch down. When you press the power button again, it is released from the gates. The problem on mine - which was accessed as els1005 described - was that the bottom of the wire had dropped below a crevice in the bottom of the switch housing (a maroon coloured plastic box containing the switch mechanisms) and wasn't passing through the gates correctly to hold the switch down. Taking a jewelry sized screwdriver, I was able to push the wire back up into its correct position so it could pass through the gates. I'm only worried this is a temporary fix. I'm not a 'lectrician by any means and don't know much about electrical engineering (got a D in that class!), but the toggle switch that connects the metal leads on one side was burnt black. Whether this is normal in electrical equipment, I don't know. If the Dyson burns up, I'll post here ASAP!

I don't think mine is the Animal, but an original DC07 (had it for 5 years). Probably insignificant, but I've already said I don't know what I'm talking about.

When pushing the button on the vacuum it will not stay on it just pops back off. But when holding down the switch it stays on

I had the same problem. I took apart cyclone filtration portions and shook out a lot of fine silt, cut the hair out of the brush, and reset the overheat shut off. To do this I pulled the handle down to vacuuming position, laid it on its side, then pressed the power button five times. Viola! Back in working order. This is a magnificent vacuum.

Pull the wand out of the Vac. Need to use a small Torx bit to take out 2 screws hidden behind the wand storage. Once screws are out, there are 4 push-clips which need to be un-latched. Pry the power panel off and you will expose the two switches (one for power, one for the brushes). Push the power switch down and it should "release" and go back to clicking when pushed. Re-assemble. Took about 5 minutes to fix.

Thank you very much for this information. I called Dyson and they told me it was the on/off switch and to send it in for repair was $125.00. After reading you solution I made the repair myself. Thanks Tom Cleveland. Ohio

This solution worked for my DC18 also. I didn't even have to take the switch off completely. I was able to reach in and work the power switch up and down until it clicked and works perfectly again.

I had the same problem with my animal not staying on. I removed the two star screws from behind after removing the wand; pulled away the housing; manually pushed the on/off button and it just began working again. Must have just vibrated itself out of whack or some such thing.

Unplug the power. problem seems to be with the power switch being stuck down. below the power button there's a screw. take that out and you have to really pry the cover off, but there's a switch behind there that is stuck in the on position. flick it around a little and it will go back to normal. good luck!

This worked on my Dyson D25 Animal as well. pulling the switch then wiggling the button with my finger. When I was rattling it around, a very slight (2 degree) twist seemed yielded a very quiet click an the switch began working. It sounds like this is a very common problem. Is engineering listening? Please let us know.

Switches may have problems after about 2000 or more events. Also one aspect that may not be covered in automated (mechanical) testing is that not all events are a full power on. All the time fingers slip or there is a hesitation and there is only a half press.

Vacuum will not stay on unless I hold down the power button.

Sounds like your switch has gone.

Its simple to replace, only 1 "specialist" tool is needed, but you can substitute for a small screwdriver.

If you visit http://www.sparesaver.com/help-and-support/dyson-section/dyson-technical-advice-450/ they have alot of info on repairing dyson cleaners AND they sell the parts, cheapest ive seen online.

Hope that helps

Power button won't stay on. If I hold it down, it sucks fine, but it won't stay pushed down.

Take it to a local vacuum repair shop and have them replace the power switch, once you do that your machine should be back to normal

On button won't stay on

easy fix, unplug the machine sit in front of it. put your thumb on the on/off button and push down and slip your thumb off of it as fast as you can so it pops real loud. Do this ten times and then plug back in and see if it works. ( this came from talking with Dyson people) Hope it works for you. They said this will reset the machine. also acts as a warning that your filters most likely need cleaned.

Dyson noise.

Check all ports for a clog, there are removable covers you can take off, also check the hose for a clog. Make sure all filters are clean. Worse case is a problem with the motor.
