Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Kenmore Dishwasher 665.1383 is about 4 years old. The past 2 months it has developed a strong plastic or chemical smell. The smell has tainted brand new glasses that then have the odor when they are taken from the shelf to use. It is very strong during use and can be smelled throughout the house. I have taken everything out down to the screen to look for debris or anything that could cause the smell. I have tried the vinegar remedy and also scrubbed the entire inside with bleach. Nothing helps. Is it possible the plastic tub or rack or wheels are deteriorating?

That's not the full model number, there should be four more numbers.anyway does it have a heating element in the bottom of the tub,if so feel it with your hands,a piece of plastic could of hit it and is still melting when you run it,you can try using dishwasher magic,it's a bottle that you stick in the washer, the heat opens the bottle and it cleans the machine, also what kind of soap are you using?maybe try a new brand.also make sure the heater is in the metal holders,i've seen it knocked out and it will burn a hole through the tub.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, the model number does have more digits. The entire number is 665.13839K601. I thoroughly checked the heating element visually and by touch. Found nothing. The element is securely in its brackets. I did use a bottle of Dishwasher Magic a few days after the vinegar and bleach treatments. It seemed a bit better for one run, then back to the stink. We tried switching from Cascade liquid to Sunlight liquid. That did not change the smell. The only thing I have not changed is the Jet Dry, but I have been using the same bottle of that for several months before the smell started. I also tried calling the recall number at Whirlpool to see if perhaps there is a recall on this dishwasher. They said it is not on a recall list and to call a service company. I think I have done everything that a service company would do. Any thing else that I should try before I go by a new one?

  • Sal De Apr 09, 2011 this and also try cleaning out the chopper, this video will show you how to get at it if you haven't done it already.... only other thing i can think of is the water supply, the hot water comes from the tank, have you filled up a glass of hot water to see if it smells.on a few dishwashers that were having trouble filling i've found like plastic pieces in the screen and it was pieces of the hot water tank but nobody complained about a plastic smell,i'm just guessing now so try the tablets, check the water and clean the chopper, the water passes through the chopper so if anything is in there it could travel through the water and throughout the machine but like i say i'm just guessing,i thought you would of found something on the heater,i find alot of plastic pieces that fall stuck on the heater.let me know what you find you got me thinking on this one, good luck

usually the jet dry is in a bottle, when you put it in the machine it lasts like three months.have you changed any detergent or anything over the last two months,i don't think it's from the tub or anything like that, check the jet dry and see how it smells from the bottle

  • rigglebeck Apr 10, 2011

The jet dry smells normal in the bottle and in the dispenser.

have you put anything new in the dishwasher that might not be dishwasher safe or shouldn't be put in the dishwasher that could be causing this, one more thing have you tried just running the dishwasher with nothing in it just water to see if the smell goes away or gets any better,i would try the jet dry again or those tablets in the video, clean the dishwasher like that then run the dishwasher with just water to see if the smell gets strong again,if it doesn't i would say it's not the machine it could be from something that's going into the machine that's causing it,you don't wanna go buy a new machine and this happens again but if you do buy a new d.w. get a stainless steel kitchen aid,i think they are the best d.w. out there.i wish i could help you out but like i say this is strange, are the dishes clean when they come out?when the d.w. starts have you opened the door to check that the water level is up where it should be and is the detergent washed out of the cup,i'm just wondering if you're having a water problem, also if the drain line connects to your disposal, make sure the line is looped,it should be up higher than the disposal so the water won't siphon back into the d.w.i looked up online and some guy said that at the bottom of the door there are some vent holes,he says there was all kinds of junk stuck in there that had the same smell he was smelling on his dishes and he took out the plastic tub on the back wall where the water runs up to the top spray arm and flushed that out,but like i say even with him it sounds like there isn't enough water in the machine to flush out the junk itself, when the d.w. is running correctly you can hear it agitate with force but he says it helped him i guess you can check it out, this is all i have i wish it was more, good luck with your d.w. and let me know if you find anything.

My refrigerator developed a chemical smell, more profound in the freezer. It caused the ice to have a chemical taste in them. The refrigerator is about 8 years old but used only about 5-6 years. Frigidaire...

In the freezer behind the false wall is an evaporator, surrounding this is a heater for defrost purposes. While inspecting this, look to see if the heater has made contact with the liner in any way, it is possible but rare the cal-rod heater has changed shape and made contact with the liner. So when the heater comes on during defrost it melts the liner giving off a chemical/burnt plastic smell. Best repair in this problem is to move or relocate the heater away from the liner, seal the liner with silicon and tape (a nylon tape), be sure to clean the heater also to prevent more smells. Good Luck

Awful smell and taste to water boiled in a stainless steel kettl

I have the same problem. Noticed it was in two different pots. The comment number one must be correct because I only use VERY high alkaline water to boil my foods. I had a feeling it was my water. So interesting! I will clean it w white vinegar and see if the smell goes away. SAME weird chemical smell- turns your stomach.

I know this is strange but here goes. I have a Kenmore Coldspot side by side Refrigerator. This past summer, it was leaking water out the front freezer door. We turned off the water and called a repair...

Turn off the fridge. Remove the freezer bins in the bottom. Defrost the drain line with a hair dryer. It is on the lower back portion of the freezer. Break up the ice on the freezer floor and dispose of it.
Discard any old freezer food. Change out the water supply line with a copper line if you are using a plastic line.

Kenmore side-by-side has CHEMICAL SMELL ODOR inside.

You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!

Refrigerator Smell

Is the problem more in the freezer than the fridge section. If it is it is possible that on a defrost cycle the heaters which warm the coil may have warped and ar heating something they shouldnt. Another possibility is if there is something in the condensate tray (where the water collects) or something touching the compressor which runs very hot, or even the compressor relay if it is a 'plastic' smell. Smells are notoriously bad things to trace as engineers normally turn up when the smell is either gone or so faint as to not to detect. All I can suggest is trying to narrow the search area as much as you can and hopefully youll find it. Hope this is of some help.
