Question about Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop Computer

1 Answer

I want to know how to do backups to an external hard drive. I have tried and it does not seem to work. I have Vista Home Basic and Premium on my desktop and laptop. Why am I having all this trouble. I hate Vista as it sent my backups to the Recovery D drive which filled up and I moved it to the desktop hoping to get it over to the external hard drive. Any help would be most appreciated.

Are you aware Vista has USB issues. It has some of the slowest transfer rates on USB. so if you are trying to transfer data from the Laptop / Desktop to an external drive it will take days and might even damage your devices for their continuous running.

Switch back to XP. Vista has some serious USB issues. Back up will take days or weeks because it is very slow. And in the process you might even damage the hardware because of the extended period of continuous running.Check out the link to find out other users who are cursing VISTA

Which Windows Vista Edition are you?

If you are upgrading XP to Vista, make sure you backup and have the program "Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor"

Download Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=42B5AC83-C24F-4863-A389-3FFC194924F8&displaylang=en

Be Sure to Backup with a removable media such as CD's, Floppy Disks or USB Flash Drives, External Hard Drivers.

Windows Vista Editions:

Windows Vista Home Basic
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Vista Business
Windows Vista Ultimate
Windows Vista Starter
Windows Vista Enterprise

These also include 64-bit.

Lastly, if you have XP and if it's Vista Capable, you don't need to use the upgrade advisor, you are allowed to use any, but you must download the drivers after upgrade.

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

This problem happens quite a bit with Windows Vista. It seems that Windows Vista puts a hidden file in the backup; which locks the device.

Open the external device (Windows 7 is fine). Click on "view hidden folders and files." Delete any hidden files you may have in the external.

Go back to "my computer" and right click on the external hard drive letter. Choose properties and security tab. Make your user-name as a main user (administrator) and disable the read only.

Reboot the computer and see if this works.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Minimum requirement for vista

Windows Vista minimum supported system requirements Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Ultimate:
800 MHz processor and 512 MB of system memory, 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space, Support for Super VGA graphics, DVD-ROM drive.
But i recommend at least 1GB RAM for Vista Home Basic - Home Premium and at least 2GB RAM for the rest.

Corrupt file system

In Windows Explorer, right-click on the drive and select Properties from the context menu. Select the Tools tab. Click on the Check Now button in the Error-checking box. It will probably respond with a UAC prompt, so enter a username that has administrator access and its password or select the Continue button as required. If the chkdsk utility cannot establish exclusive control over the drive you may need to schedule the check to run after the next reboot, then reboot the machine. It will run a comprehensive check of all of the structures on the drive and fix any errors it encounters. Once it is done, you should be able to backup the drive.

Unable to install IOMEGA HDD on Vista Home Premium

Vista may require drivers that are not preinstalled. If the drive clearly works on one machine, but not another, its safe to pressume its not the drive. On the VISTA machine, go to the Iomega site and download the driver for vista or usb or whatnot.
