Question about Dremel 395 Variable Speed Multipro Rotary Tool Kit

1 Answer

I was working with the dremel and it shut down and would not turn back on, the motor was not hot. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the brushes in the side of the motor housing?

My dremel started doing that too. If I rubbed the sanding drum along a piece of wood, it would start up again. I think the brushes and the copper armature get glazed over with non conductive dust and possibly insulation smoke which disconnects it enough to stall out. Change the brushes to the new ones in the kit. After a year of heavy use mine slowwed down to about 300 rpm and then died. A very nice tool but I prefer the Makita which is about three times this size just because it is longer lived.

I have a 56 frame mustang pool motor. After running a while it shuts off and after 5 to 10 minutes turns back on. I dont think the timer is the problem because the switch on the time is on when the motor...

I suspect the cooling fan has separated from the shaft or the vent holes are plugged. There is an internal thermal switch that opens when the motor gets too hot, then closes when it cools off, and the motor starts again. When the motor is running hold your hand under the vent holes on the bottom of the motor and you should feel a pretty good breeze, usually hot air coming out of the motor.

The vacuum is probably getting hot and the thermal sensor in the motor is shutting it off and then allowing it to come back on after it cools down. You mentioned replacing the secondary filters, replace the exhaust filter too.
If replacing all the filters did not solve it you may have a clog or restriction somewhere causing the loss of suction and the overheating.

Motor works but no drive to shaft.

My 15 year old Dremel 395 had the same problem so I took it apart. There is a plastic spline between the motor and the output shaft to the chuck . My plastic spline was split and had many of its teeth sheared off. The shaft lock acts on the output shaft side of this spline, so it was ok. Otherwise everything looked great; bearings ran free & had little play free, brushes ok. To be fair, my Dremel had seen hard use & doesn't owe me anything. No luck so far finding replacement spline parts, which if available should be easy to install. To take apart your tool, just google "Dremel Disassembly". GOOD LUCK!

No power

If you already checked and replaced the brushes but it is still not turning then you do these:
Try to see if your unit have a safety breaker and reset it,most of power tools have also a fuse in the plug itself.
Also some have a thermostat fuse.,you can find it attached on the rewined coil.

Dremel 395 in the middle of drilling sea glass and the collet and bit stop turning while the motor is still running fine! GRRRRR Thanks for any suggestions!

sounds like the rubber connector between the motor and collet.i use rubber tubing and hot glue to keep it working. bad news is you have to disassemble it to install a new connector.

Fan motor runs for awhile and then runs hot and shuts off

Bearings in the motor may need oiling. look for a tiny funnel hole on a tube on the ends to oil it. Remove power first.
If none it could be permanently sealed and need to replace the motor.
Let it cool before touching anything. again remove power first.

Dremel model 395, Type 5

Brushes are usually conducting carbon sticks at one end of the rotator (spiny bit in middle of motor) there will be two (opposite each other) connecting to the commutator (round copper looking ring with slits in it). The brushes will each have a spring that pushes them onto the commutator and a wire to carry the electricity to the brush.

As the rotator spins, the brushes connect to different coils via the commutator. This allows the electricity to energize the next set of coils to make the motor spin more.

If the motor gets very hot the brushes can stick in their housing and loose contact.
My Dremels (and type) all have the motor cooling exhausts and intakes where you need to hold them. It is quite hard to not block them during use..
I would also get hold of a multi-meter or continuity checker and check that the lead into the motor has not broken inside. Another common problem.
