Center rail is one pole and the wheel rails are the other pole. Of course power is provided to the rail by a special piece of rail or a special connector with two screws that snaps to a standard rail. Your transformer has two terminals and there should be one wire from each transformer terminal to each of the two screws on the special connector. Depending on the direction you are going, one is + and the other is - from your transformer. The pick ups (the wheels on the outside rails and the center roller) send the variable voltage power to the motor which runs forward or in reverse, depending upon polarity. This shouldn't be any more complicated. The Light and Smoke (if any) don't care about the actual voltage (+ and - or - and +), just that there is voltage, while the motor is sensitive to the direction the power is actually going.

Always make connections between the transformer and rail with the transformer unplugged from the power source.

I hope this answers your question about your Lionel Train Locomotive.

Have you looked here at all? http://www.lionel.com/CustomerService/se...

Here is another resource - I think your answer will be here: http://www.lionel.com/media/servicedocum...

My Lionel is not nearly as sophisticated as is yours. I am using "poles" in my response to help explain the operation but of course, yours is a AC train and doesn't actually have "poles".

The value of a train set 1953 Locomotive 1130

A Lionel 1130 is a "Scout" type locomotive....they are not particularly valuable even to collectors. They were a part of the low end starter sets Lionel made. Now if you had a similar vintage 736 Berkshire or a 681 or 682 Turbine they are worth considerably more.

Help please. Lionel (30190) Thomas & Friends remote O gauge. Train won't move. Light comes no, nothing. I took the roof off and made sure the switch was in the on position. ??

First, check to make certain that the batteries in the remote are good.
Second, if the train has been running and the problem is new, clean your wheels and pick up roller on the locomotive, then clean the track.
Make certain that when you use the remote, you orient the antenna in an upright position and are within 6 to 8 feet of the locomotive.
If none of the above helps, contact the Lionel Service Department.

Many of the MTH Protosounds 1 and 2 and Trainmaster will not work with the Lionel CW-80 electronic power source. The output waveform is so non-like sinusoidal. The electronic sound systems will not usually respond to this waveform and when they do, the sound will be garbled. Use another power source.

How the power is transfered to the train?

the power from the wall outlet is ( transformed) to 17voilts AC and comes out on posts on the transformer that red and black wires then are connected to the track The rails on the track are entergized and the wheels and the center pickup ride on the track and transfer the power ot the locomotive. the center rail is common and the outside rail is motor power or whisle power.
