I have the manual but it does not show how best to access starter. Have removed hood from tractor and the shroud that covers the head and starter. Do not know how to proceed from this point. I have ordered and received the brush kit and will also get bushing kit. Just need to know how to remove starter.

  • arleneaduke Apr 10, 2011

My owner's manual lists the Engine Model Number 739.11054D it is an Onan engine. Is this the engine number I need or should I get it off the engine?

  • arleneaduke Apr 10, 2011

Thanks for your help. In the morning we will look at it again using this information. I have the brush kit and when we get the starter off I will get the other kits you mentioned. As you said, plenty of info for rebuilding the starter but none about getting it off. It is up under the head and there is probably something we are not seeing. Trying to get it out without taking off a bunch of other stuff but may have too. This tractor is old but is such a good one I want to keep it going. I will give you a report tomorrow after we have another go at it. Thanks again.

The bolts appear to be under the flywheel. Should be able to get them out without to much trouble. Thanks for the very knowledgeable help.

  • arleneaduke Apr 10, 2011

Thanks for you help. Can see the bolt under the flywheel. Have not removed it yet but don't think this will be much trouble.

Can see a couple of bolts underneath the flywheel. Haven't removed them yet but don't think this will be a problem. Thanks for the very knowledgeable help.

I can get you the service manual to show you how to repair your starter but the service manuals are listed by ENGINE number only. If you respond with your ENGINE number I will get you the manual.

Thanks,
Kelly

After looking deeper this lawnmower has a 20 HP Onan twin cylinder engine. The starter breakdown is here: (Page 42)

    http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/lis_pdf/...

The part number for the brush assembly is 191-1951 and can be purchased here:

    http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdir...

Note that there are no less than 5 kits in the manual on page 43 of the itemized parts list for repairing this starter. Once you get it apart you may find that you need bushings and possibly a start clutch assembly.

Your engine model number is: 739.11054D

As far as I can tell there are 2 bolts opposite of the solenoid (180 deg away) that need to be removed along with the Positive lead to the starter and it should come off. Here is the kicker.... This is an Onan engine and the bolt heads may actually be under the air shroud.

I even went to the Service manual here: (page 32 and it was no help for removal)

    http://home.comcast.net/~lyon.family1/Wh...

However.... loads of rebuild information. I know for a fact there are only 2 bolts holding on the starter. It is a matter of locating the bolt heads which I am now thinking are inside the air shroud.

Doing a cross reference this is actually the Onan P220 engine.

The Service manual link above hopefully will be of some help.

If the bolt heads for this are under the flywheel as I suspect they are because this 56 year old memory of mine occassionally fades.... the only tool you can use to get them out is a combination wrench.

I agree on keeping "an oldie but a goodie" going. This mower was the main competition of the Cub Cadet back in the day. I am sure you knew that when you bought it. Appreciate the feed back you passed. I have to respond within 4 hours any time you give a reply; so there is no need to respond until you have anything you wish to pass at a later time. Happy hunting on the starter bolts. I just hope I passed enough information that will help you down the road.

Here is a link to your Owners Manual from Sears Parts Central. You can print is for future reference. In addition you can purchase any necessary repair parts from them. As well as talk to a service technician if you need additional help.

Hope this helped steer you in the right direction.

The starter is all one piece. Once you disconnect the wires from the terminal, there's only one bold that holds the starter in place. By removing it, the starter crank should slide right of the shaft.

It's best to compare the two, just to make sure it is correct.

How do I remove the starter from a Kohler Courage 20hp vertical engine?

go to Partstree.com and look up the engine model.

You will get a nice breakdown.
I believe it is held on by 2 screws towards the top.
You should not have to remove the engine, just the upper housing.

Craftsman 18.5hp new battery new solenoid will only crank one revalution then quit what next?

It could be several things !! well not the battry !! you can check that out from the list !! sounds like the starter is dragging, you can try to jump it off with a screw driver turn the key on and touch the two srews on the solenoid becareful cause its going to spark a little , check to see if it still drags or it fires right up !? if it drags and turns slow than its most likley your starter ,check and see if the starter geting real hot also ? thats one of the signs that its going out also ,

I need to remove the starter on my Craftsman 19.5HP Lawn Tractor (Model Number 917.270821); How do I begin?

You would want to begin by removing the power going To the starter itself. That means, you need to remove the ground cable on the battery itself. You can remove them both if you feel the need. That is your starting point. Then remove and tag any wires on you starter. Then you would remove the starter itself.

Go to... http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action Enter the model number that is under the seat. If it's a lawn tractor, it will start with 917. That will get you to all the diagrams of the mower.

save yourself some money and go get a lawn mower solenoid and find a way to mount it yourself. I have done a johnson outboard and a tigershark jet ski this way with no problems.

Starter drags???

it sounds like the new starter is faulty , I would suggest having it checked by a service shop or a starter rebuild shop, most parts supply stores dont charge for this test but you will have to remove the starter from the truck.
