This sounds like an overheating problem, does the base of the laptop get very hot? If the machine is still in warranty get the manufacturer to fix it, otherwise you may need to get a quote from a local computer repair shop to see if it is worth fixing.

Its either over heating or a virus causing it. if its heat try propping the laptop up off of the surface (the intake vent is located on the bottom) to increase airflow also overheating could of caused a hardware failure but that's highly unlikely. if a virus caused it you would know because to have a virus do that you would notice the drastic performance issues. and your pc acting like it haves "a mind of its own" from time to time [side notes: laptops have very poor cooling systems in general having a laptop sitting on your lap or your bed if not recommended actually its frowned upon and your cooling fan may have also gave out check to see if the output vent is blowing any type of air at all] most computers have a function where the system powers off to save the CPU from damage which its very expensive to replace

Most laptops that overheat have a buildup of dust on the cooling fins preventing air from flowing freely. Best way to clean it out is by blowing out the dust by forcing air through the exhaust vent out through the fan. You can put the hose on the output port of a shop vac and use a nozzle to narrow the flow. Blow all open areas including the fan and hit the keyboard while you are at it. Also verify that the fan is working and consider a cooling pad.

Warning! Before Disassembling Laptop always unplug power and remove the battery.
Laptops that shut down without warning are often experiencing overheating issues. Overheating may be a symptom of age, of clogged ventilation or impending failure, but it can also result from simply using the laptop in a bad location. Before you try to take the laptop apart to look for problems, it pays to patiently troubleshoot the symptoms and see if an easy fix is possible. I wrote The Laptop Repair Workbook to teach basic laptop technology and troubleshooting to regular people and techs in training.
