Absolutely.
You're going to want to get some kind of drive imaging program like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost (the only Norton program I do like) and make a duplicate copy of this drive to the new drive.
Procedure should go like:
install acronis true image
create bootable media
power system down
hook up new drive (do not disconnect old one yet)
boot the system from the acronis CD
clone the 250G to the new drive
power down and remove the 250G.

Your system should boot right up off the new drive (may do the new hardware found thing though)

NOW you should call 310-DELL and see if your 250G is under warranty - it just might be!
if it is, get it replaced, and install it in the system as a backup or data storage drive - or even sell it to help recoup the cost of the replacement drive. I suggest using it as a backup drive after this scare!

Why would we buy a new drive BEFORE checking the warranty you say? To save our OS and all our programs and pictures and music and whatever else is on the failing drive!

When you are buying the new drive, most shops will show you quickly what's involved in hooking up the new drive, since it only takes a couple minutes.

If you aren't comfortable with the whole procedure - go to a computer store and tell them you'd really like to buy a new hard disk and put the old one in another system, but you don't want to lose all your data. Most places will offer to do your transfer and installation for you - and since you said you wanted to put the old drive in another system, this ensures you get the original drive back!

Replacing the hard drive involves the following process:

  1. Turn off and unplug the computer
  2. Remove the two screws from the left panel (facing the front of the tower)
  3. Slide the left panel back and to the left to remove it
  4. Unplug both power and data from the hard drive
  5. Unscrew the hard drive (You may need also remove the right panel to get to additional screws)
  6. Slide hard drive out
  7. Slide in new hard drive.
  8. Screw in new hard drive in approximately the same fashion as previous hard drive was screwed in
  9. Plug in power and data
  10. Re-install panel
  11. Plug computer in and boot

However, if this is your main or only hard drive, you will need to install your Operating system and all of your software and files from scratch. It may be possible to preserve them, but that's often risky and requires a bit more work. If this is your main hard drive, you probably want to consult an expert on having the old drive contents moved to the new drive.

I have a compaq witha samsung hd M/NSP2504C, S/N S09QJ1ULB30333. What are the speed and buffer specifications and which hard drive would you recommend for a compatable replacement or slave.

Hello
Samsung SP2504C is a 250 GB hard disk drive using the new SATA-300 interface, which allows a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 300 MB/s. Its main specs also include an 8 MB buffer, 7,200 rpm rotation speed and support to NCQ (Native Command Queuing). In this review we checked the performance of Samsung SP2504C installed on a motherboard using a regular SATA-150 port and also on a motherboard using the new SATA-300 port.
This very same hard disk drive is also available with a 200 GB capacity, being called SP2004C. Both belong to SpinPoint P120 series from Samsung.
Good LUCK AND DO RATE THE SOLUTION IF HELPS

Jumper setting for slave drive

there is no such master or slave setting when SATA is used.
it is mainly used to tell the motherboard which one is master or slave when connected with IDE cable (PATA).
you don't need to worry about it as you are using a SATA HD.

the boot disk priority can be set in the BIOS
press del or F2 after you press the power button on CPU. you will be put with the BIOS/CMOS setup. go to boot priority and set accordingly, there is also an option to set the default hard disk in case you have more than one HD.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 has Samsung Model MP0603H hard drive. The computer was working fine till this morning when it would not boot. I ran diagnostic using the Dell CD and the results stated: Error Code...

Those codes all apply to the hard drive itself..

Replacing the hard drive is all you should have to do.

PC Doctor error code Failed SMART Test Error Code HD521-2W

This is in an HP PC? This error (like most SMART errors) is indicative that your disk is on its way out. Your best bet is to buy a new disk quickly, and get important information off this one! SMART errors are usually fairly accurate, though occasionally disks go on for years.
