hi, what should I set the monitor's resolution to?

  • claremorton Apr 09, 2011

    no this isn't possible -

my mac is set up as 1280 x 800 but the only resolution options my monitor is giving me are

    1280 x 1024

    or 1280 x 960

both of which result in a distorted or blurred image.

Is there a way that I can over ride these settings so that the image on the monitor is clear and undistorted? I don't mind having black space down the sides of the screen is that mean the macbook screen is replicated. at the moment, I have black bars top and bottom

    thank you

    hi, thanks,

can you recommend which monitor I should try? I am assuming a mac monitor would work perfectly although much more expensive!

Hi There and Welcome to Fixya.

Connecting a monitor to your MBP gives you more space to work on. You may want to check on the following and see if it was done properly :

  • Ensure physical connection - either mini DVI or mini DVI-VGA will work
  • Turn on the mirror mode by pressing "F7" or "Fn+F7"
  • Adjust the resolution of the monitor through the system preferences or the "Display status" in the menu bar
  • Put the macbook into "Sleep mode" to obtain the full (optimum) resolution on the AOC monitor
  • Keep the lid of the laptop open to access kybd and track pad
  • To boot the computer using the AOC monitor, turn on the computer and close the lid of the laptop at once.
Please let me know if this wont work.

Thank you for using Fixya.

I assume that you already tried any of the font smoothing options under appearance in system preferences. Anyways, this issue has been rolling out for quite a long time with Mac OSX and external display, either in VGA or DVI mode. To give you a straight answer, there are no options to override the ext display resolution. OSx 'makes' the external display fit it's resolution of 1280x800 - hence, the blurred fonts/texts/images. For more information, here is a discussion surrounding the same :

My best recommendation is to try out a different monitor with different resolution aspects.

    Thanks.

Apple LCD/LED monitors are highly recommended, though you can consider those "non-glossy" DELL LCD monitors as well - I would prefer if you can bring the macbook with you to ultimately try those potential LCD's while in the store.

    Thank you.

This sounds like a computer problem and not really a television problem. Check your driver files.

Try removing your driver files. Then disconnect your AOC monitor. Reboot the computer and login. Shut down the computer and reconnect the AOC monitor. Start the computer. Now install the monitor drivers.

I have a 24" aoc 2436Vh display and a new 15"

I purchased the AOC 2436Vh display yesterday. To get my MacBook Pro to work with it I purchased Apple's Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Since the monitor comes with the VGA cable, all you need is the adapter to plug it into your MacBook Pro. It works beautifully and set up is easy if you know your way around the Mac. Although the HDMI works perfectly with my PS3, I strongly recommend the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. I hope this helps.

Some where on you screen is a menu button that allows you to access teh screens utilities. One of teh utilities is the screen's geometry. Iti is here that you can adjust the length, width, position, etc.

You may want to access the vendors web site and sownload the user manual.

Screen resolution.

Hello there!

It's fortunately quite easy to adjust the resolution your MacBook Pro sends over to your external display.  Try this:
  1. Click the blue Apple icon, at the top-left of your display (while connected to your 23" external monitor).
  2. Click on "System Preferences".
  3. Click on "Displays" in the "Hardware" row.
  4. A display preferences window should now open on each display... one on your laptop, and one on the 23".
  5. In the "Display" tab of this preference window, specifically the one located on your 23" display, should be a list of resolutions available.  Scroll down and select the highest resolution, which for a 23" should be 1920x1200.
This should adjust your resolution to the maximum.  To make these settings easier to get to in the future, check the box in the display preferences labeled "Show displays in menu bar".  You'll see a small icon, meant to look like a display, appear in your menu bar.  Going forward, you can click on this to set/change resolution settings without going through all the above steps.

Hope this helps!
