I am not familiar with the OfficeMax brand shredder, but every other one that I have worked on has a small F/R (Forward/Reverse) switch either on top or on the side. Make sure the switch is set to "F".

This switch is to back paper out of the shredder if either too many sheets are fed in or if something like a paperclip gets stuck. Ask around in your office or in your household if somebody got it jammed and have them point out the switch to you if you have trouble finding it.

If it is reversing itself, it is sensing a jam and trying to clear it. You will need to unplug and disassemble the unit to clear the jam. Most often, the problem is from "gummies" like those from self sealing envelopes or (even worse) the thick glue that is used on many bulk mailings to hold attachments. This stuff has to be manually cleared and it can be to the point where it is so embedded in the rollers of your shredder that it is rendered useless. My best advice is that if you are so inclined, you disassemble your OMO1288 and try to find what is wrapped around the rollers causing the jam. It is probably going to be a combination of glue, dirt, and hair (very common), and use whatever tools you have to cut and pull the material out from between the rollers to clear them. My own personal at-home experience has been 50%- one shredder (an Office Depot crosscut model)was so clogged up with debris- (specifically, junk mail "gluies" and hair) that I had to throw it out, and my current one was salvagable after an hours work cleaning out glue, hair, and embedded staples.

It is not cost effective to call a service tech to fix your shredder for you.... unless you are running a MILSPEC type shredder that reduces documents to dust, and OM does not sell such a unit.

The bottom line is that if you can not clear it yourself and make it work, it is much more economical to just throw it away and get a new one, making sure that everyone that uses it understands the RULES and only feeds the shredder paper and not junk mail. post-it pads, etc....

My officemax OM01288 Shredder green shred button is stuck inside. It will not shred. How can I fix it?

Some disassembly will be required (with power off) to get access to the button and release it BUT it may have failed mechanically and can't be fixed.

My shredder won't shred

If the motor will not run, then probably there's paper clogged in the shredder. Turn over the shredder, after unplugging the power cord, and remove the papers.

If the motor will run but not shredding any paper, then the drive gear has broken teeth. This is not usually worth fixing.
Hope this helps.

My shredder runs non stop, when I insert paper to shred , it stops... I push reverse, it works , pull paper out and runs non stop.......

Sounds like a bad or stuck sensor, acting as if it is always seeing a peice of paper in it. Check if you can find it and maybe it is just stuck to the on position..

Fellowes P35C works in reverse but not forwards

In forward operation, a detector senses the presence of material in the feeder and turns it on. Reverse operation is selected by switch position; no sensor is involved. I would bet that if you remove power and turn the shredder upside down you will find bits of shredded paper clogging your shredder, particularly in the center area where the detector is located. After thorough removal of debris, you should be back to normal operation

My paper shredder has stopped working. There is nothing jamming it - what should I do?

I had this same problem on one machine i repaired and when I took off ththe top cover it had a bad gear where it was split and it would run fine backwards, but not forward. the gear is available online. it was also
clogged with paper, which must have caused a lot of torque on the gear. they are plastic, so they will break instead of really messing something up. good luck

Hello my nane is Tom. The shredder doesn't work. It will run in reverse but when I turn it to forward it run for a second or two than stops. I looked and I can't see anything jamed in it.

I got mine to work by running it on reverse for a moment then sliding it to auto. It stopped. Then I did it again. This time auto ran just for a second then stopped. I did it a third time but I had a sheet of paper ready in the feeder. Ran on reverse. Slid it to auto and it took the paper and shred it. I did it a fourth time. Reverse slide auto and feed shred the paper. Fifth time Auto shred the paper without reverse. :)

Forward shredding will not run, no jam, reverse will run.

The switch usually only reverses the polarity of the motor, making it run forward or reverse. If the motor runs one way and not the other the one side of the switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

My shredder overload light comes on immediately with only one sheet of paper inserted and it won't go.

Try running the machine in reverse and putting some shredder oil onto the cutting blades to loosen things up. Then try running the machine in the forward direction but hold the paper in the eyes but dont let it go into the shredding blades...see if it runs forward.!
If it will do this then slowly try paper 1 sheet at a time..but put some shredder oil onto the sheets of paper you are shredding.
If the overload light still comes on without even letting you shred 1 sheet of paper then you likely have another problem...maybe the motor or can contact Royal at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.

When you put paper in it starts to shred for about 1/4 inch then goes to reverse. No jams that I can see. Can run forward and reverse without paper with no problem. Sensor problem?

No mention of make or model however this holds true for all shredders.... especially if its a "cross-cut" shredder; put some shredder oil onto the cutting shafts where you insert the paper this will help get rid of some of the build-up that occurs due to the shredding process...also give the "eyes" in the middle of the "throat" a clan with a soft cloth( unplug the machine first or it will start to run and take your cloth in.) Occasionaly shrd a sheet of paper with some shredder oil poured directly onto the paper..this will help lubricate the cutting blades. Lastly...only shred up to about 70% of the rated cpacity..this will result in fewer jams an longer machine life.

Red overload light is on

Try pouring some shredder oil into the throat where you normally insert the paper and run the machine in reverse.Put machine back into ready condition.
Put a piece of paper in the throat just enough so the machine should run but not all the way in so that the cutting mechanism catches the paper...all you want to do is make the machine run forwards but not actually be feeding in any paper.
If it wont even run in the forward direction you may have a pcb prob...give Royal a call at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance.
