Here are the alternator wiring diagrams for Briggs and Stratton Engines:

Most alternators have an AC output but others that have an in line diode will have an AC reading BEFORE the diode and a DC reading AFTER the diode.

If you going to check alternator coil resistance you must check resistance before the outgoing in line diode connection (alternator side.)

When you check a diode you will read ZERO resistance with the meter leads in one direction but infinity when the leads are reversed probing the same two test points. Any other resistance reading = bad diode.

You may have an AC output and a bad diode from your alternator. Check the resistance of the alternator stator winding on the alternator side of the diode. You should get a reading under 500 Ohms. If you get infinty the alternator has failed.

Changing oil in Biggs and Stratton engine

Use 10W30 weight oil. The capacity is 1.5 Quarts (48 ounces) with filter change. I highly recommend you use 100% synthetic oil in an air cooled engine. Change the oil and filter every 50 hours of use.

I have a briggs 20 hp intek , it run about 15 or 20 minutes and shuts down. i've cleaned the carb replaced filter and fuel line and replaced both coils . what is making my filter run dry?

Believe it or not, I had this same thing happening on our L120 John Deere. Turned out to be a plugged gas cap vent! At first I couldn't believe it but i resolved it with my air compressor. Now I always make sure the vent is clean and have had no problems since.
