Question about ION Audio Vinyl Recording Turntable

1 Answer

The needle seems too light on the record because it continually skips in the "backward" direction. I don't know how to adjust the controls. Thank you.

These are pretty cheap units as far as quality and workmanship go.
The ancient fix is to tape a dime to the arm just above the stylus (needle).
If a dime doesn't work, use a penny.

It seems odd that ION would not take care to make this product work better - it definitely will cause me to shy away from the ION name in the future.

Oddly they make half decent guitars and I own an ION TAPE2PC USB tape deck that works great if you keep the heads clean...I record to it from the PC and to the PC from it...a neighbor has one of their electric guitars and it sounds great....just the turntable seems cheap!

their reasoning for making the needle weight so light is to reduce vinyl wear...problems occur though if the vinyl isn't perfect or is a heavy music like metal or dance hall or most modern heavy bass content music

Install a brand new needle and confirm it is inserted with the flat side facing the proper direction.. A bent, damaged needle will sometimes cause skipped stitches or even needle strikes inside the machine. A new needle is the least expensive cure for a lot of sewing machine problems. The needle should be changed about every 8 hours of sewing or at least when starting a new project.

Remove the top thread. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct.

Sometimes, skipped stitches will occur if the needle, thread, and fabric are incompatible. Be sure to use the correct needle for your project. Use a good quality thread--AVOID old or bargain bin thread!

If the machine continues to skip stitches, then it may be out of time. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

The tone arm drops onto the record, but then continues moving across the record without playing the record. Anyone know what's going on?

Does the needle actually contact the record? If not, you may be missing a "pad" under the record, or you may be simply missing the needle that needs to be there to follow the grooves.

Most sewing machines will sew well on sturdy woven fabrics without being perfectly adjusted. However, because knit fabrics have more stretch, and have a tendency to pull the needle in one direction or another, a sewing machine has to be very well adjusted to sew on them well. You needle clearance or timing could be slightly off, and would cause the machine to skip on knits. Unless you have a reasonable amount of experience with adjusting sewing machines, it would probably be best to take your machine to a repair shop to get it adjusted. Make sure you tell them what kind of thread and material you are working with. Take some samples if you can.

The needle skipping is caused by (A) a worn stylus. (B) not enough pressure. Which is solved by adjusting the weight on the end of the arm. It can only really be solved by trial and error. You increase the weight slightly, then play the record. You keep doing this till the record stays in the grooves but doesn't make a rumble sound. If it starts to rumble reduce the weight.

Needle skips along records.

3 causes
1. Bad stylus.
2. Not enough weight - adjust weight on end of arm, or turn knob with numbers up slowly bit by bit, trying a record each time till it stops but doesn't "rumble".
3. Adjust anti-skate control if it's got one. Again bit by bit, testing with record.

Most likely needs a new needle. Try needlelady.com or needledoctor.com Modern record players usually track at 2 to 4 grams of pressure. Thats about as much as a penny weighs maybe. Putting more pressure on it, will only cause it to destroy your records or sound bad. Weight adjustment is usually a very fine spring or counterweight that adjusts on the tonearm. Linear units use optical sensors to keep the tonearm aligned, but use traditional counterweights to control force. You need a gram scale made for phonos to properly adjust it. Radioshack USED to sell them 30 years ago, but most times you can just use a guess if the needle only slightly deflects when placed onm the record your usually good. If it's simply jumping and sliding across the record then the needle is shot. Even diamonds don't last forever,. as they are synthetically produced.

It seems like you need to adjust the pitch control. Try looking at the platter strobe light and seeing if it is at the correct speed. If not adjust the pitch control until you can see the dots align. As for the not returning, your automatic motor may be busted.

Needle skipping & not pushing down

There should be an "anti-skate" adjustment to control the arm moving across the record. It is possible that lubrication has stiffened up as well. This unit may need a general overhaul/cleaning.

Hi,

Are you in manual mode (and not auto) when trying to select continuous or best shot? Try lowering the image resolution also.
