Question about Meade DS-2102MAK (20103) Telescope

2 Answers

Hi, I have bought a Meade DS-2102 MAK. It has a hint of misalignment with the airey disc slightly off center in the extra focal rings. I can't find any reference to which are the collimation screws. There are 4 one the primary mirror cell, but the manual I downloaded makes no mention of collimation. I expect only 3 or two would be collimation screws. Thanks for any help offered. :) James

Yes, you can do it.

Put the tube vertically on a table.

Remove the thumb wheel of regulation by unscrewing slightly the blocking screw with a key Allen of 1,5 mm.

Undo the 4 screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Remove all the back part and you'll see the 6 screws of collimation.

The 3 longest are of use to the blocking, the shortest in the regulation.

Unscrew slightly the blocking screws before regulation.

It is necessary to make the little images of 2 mirrors coincide at the bottom inside the tube.

Also verify at the front part of the tube all the images of circles are concentric.

Don't block strongly the blocking screws after regulation.

Sorry for my bad English, I hope you'll understand.

Testimonial: "Thanks edualc78. There was one problem here, as I was wanting to collomate on a star image. The problem wasn't as course as visual mirror alignment. It is not bad really. Your description was very handy when it came to fixing the flip down mirror though, which had stuck. I thought I was looking at alignment screws at the back, so wasn't in a rush to dismantle it to fix the mirror. Took 5 min once I knew I was just looking at a cover! Regards Jim"

You cannot collimate a Maksutov style telescope without an optical bench. They are set at the factory and cannot be collimated by hand.

Most telescopes use a standard fitting eyepiece with a 1.25 inch outside diameter barrel. You can measure the mount where the eyepiece goes to make sure that yours is this size, then search on eBay or Amazon for "1.25 eyepiece" and you will find many available. Some of these will even be made by Meade, but any make will fit.

The other variable will be the focal length of the eyepiece, which is what determines it's power. The power of the scope will be the focal length of the main objective divided by the focal length of the eyepiece, so a 9mm eyepiece will give a higher magnification (and be dimmer and harder to focus and find objects) than a 20mm eyepiece. It is usual to have two or three different focal length eyepieces for viewing different objects.

You will find a large variation in prices, which is partly due to the difference in quality and type of construction of the eyepieces. Kellner eyepieces are simple and cheap, whereas Possl or orthoscopic ones are more complex and cost more. There are reasons why people will pay more for the better eyepieces.

1 1/4 inch OD is a standard size for eyepieces. You should be able to buy eyepieces in other focal lengths at any shop that sells telescopes, or online. I found hundreds of them with a quick search on Amazon, some made by Meade.

I just purchased a Polaris DS-60 by Meade and need a power supply and a operator & parts manual. Can you help me.

You can contact Meade for parts here:

Here is the manual:
http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/Reflectors/DS.pdf

It's a 12 volt power system, get the correct cigarette lighter style power plug from Meade -- it is center positive-- and use a 12 volt power pack like this one, or a car starter battery pack from Wal Mart. Make sure it has a cigarette style female plug.

Call Meade first and discuss this with them.

You must flip the internal mirror between the upright view port and the rear camera port. See page #6 in this manual and look at #8 on that page.

Meade DS-2000 Manual Doesn't have info. about Meade Ds-2130

ds-2000 refers to the model line of the scope. ds-2130 the 130 refers to the diameter of the objective lens in mm. I have a ds-2114. Where the objective lens is 114 mm in diameter. as far as the manual goes everything else should be the same.
