If it keeps going out, its more likely the thermal coupling is bad and needs replaced. if the coupling goes bad it shuts gas of to heater as a safety precaution. it does not let any gas come out of the main regulator. it works on the principal when the end gets hot it opens the gas valve and lets gas through to burner. replace coupling. have a good day !!

Finally found the reset button on my Whirlpool hot water tank, but it will not budge when I push it. Why? Pilot will not light.

Reset button on gas water heater??
Usually there is not a reset button on gas water heater, which might explain why is doesn't move:

Do you mean the igniter button for lighting pilot?? The piezo igniter can go bad.

My whirlpool 50 gal natural gas water heater wont stay lit?

Are you sure the pilot is heating up the thermocouple? Make sure the flame is close enough to the thermocouple. Also make sure the thermocouple is seated properly in control valve. Try unscrewing and resetting it back into place.

Pilot light would not light but i could hear and smell gas coming out of pilot valve so i took off cover and cleaned it. It still would not light with the ignitor button so I did it manually and there is a...

sounds like the thermocouple:
The thermocouple is a safety device that turns off the gas if there is no pilot light. If you look closely at the burning pilot light, there is a small metal tube that sits directly in the flame, with wires that lead back to the gas valve. The thermocouple generates a small amount of electrical current when heated by the flame. This current keeps the gas safety valve open. If the pilot light gets blown out, the current stops and the gas valve closes. When you light the pilot light, you hold down the over-ride button for about 30 seconds. This allows the gas to flow long enough to heat up the thermocouple and generate current and then you can release the over-ride button and gas will continue to flow. If the thermocouple is defective, then as soon as you release the over-ride button, since there is no electrical current, the gas will stop flowing and the pilot light will go out.

This is a pretty common failure on water heaters and furnaces. Replacement of the thermocouple is fairly simple if you are the handyman type. If not, the thermocouple is a cheap part -- about $10 bucks, but the service call may run you $100 or so. Before you call a serviceman, get all of the brand and model information from the information plate on the heater so he can bring the proper replacement part. And sorry for your trouble. hope this helps:)

My hot waterheater will light but when i release the reset button after over a minute the pilot light goes out. what do i do

There is a small probe with its tip in the pilot flame called a thermocouple,
this is a flame failure device and shuts off the pilot in the event the flame goes out due to wind water or no gas, this device can become bunrt out usually after many years of use and can normally be replaced, you can purchase a universal thermocouple from most gas appliance retailers

Whirlpool water heater went out. Pilot will not light. Cannot hear or smell gas when I press reset button.

With just the little information you left, my first reaction is that your propane tank is empty, but I don't know if it's propane or nat gas. It is also possible you have a dirty filter screen. Some brilliant engineer decided to install these on the bottom of today's water heaters and then require they be cleaned every 6 months. If you don't and they get dirty, which they always do, then the pilot goes out and it will not relight. Cleaning the fine mesh screen below the burner is what is needed to prevent this from occurring. Other brands are replacing the existing burner assembly with a new burner assembly that has a reset switch built into it. You may call Whirlpool and see if this applies to your water heater. They will need your model # and serial #. Hope this helps. Douglas

Pilot goes out once button is released

If the new thermocouple was installed properly, with its tip in or across the pilot flame so as to be heated by the flame, then the control valve may be faulty.

Note: The pilot primer button may need to be held down for a longer period of time.

Burner on new Whirlpool gass water heater will not stay lit

One of the proper ways to light a gas water heater, is to turn the black knob to Pilot, put a match to the end of the pilot light, while holding the match there, push the red reset button down and hold the match & the reset button down for one full minute. Then, release the reset button and turn the black knob to On. This should keep the pilot light on.
