Question about Apple iTunes

I am using Windows 7. I get an error message from iTunes "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk. What is an easy way for someone not computer savvy to solve this issue?

When I try installing Itunes half way through installing a pop up comes up saying- "Could not access network location %APPDATA%\." Can u help me fix this.


Please take note that the following steps is in assumption that you are using a Windows operating system.) As I have found out in the iTunes support in apple.com, this symptom may be caused by anti-spyware software preventing iTunes from installing correctly. One such application is SpyCatcher. Before installing iTunes, temporarily remove this software to allow the iTunes installer to complete.

If you are still having trouble installing iTunes for Windows, follow the troubleshooting suggestions described in this article.

General installation troubleshooting Important: iTunes installation is successful a majority of the time after completing these troubleshooting procedures. If one step does not resolve your issue proceed to the next.
1. Empty your Temp directory and restart
Windows XP:
  1. Choose Start > My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
  2. In My Computer or Computer, open the "C:" drive.
  3. Open Documents and Settings.
  4. Double-click the folder titled with your username.
  5. If you see a Local Settings folder, skip to step 10. If you don't see a Local Settings folder, proceed to the next step.
  6. Choose Tools > Folder Options.
  7. Click the View tab.
  8. Select the option to "Show hidden files and folders."
  9. Click OK.
  10. Double-click Local Settings.
  11. Right-click on the Temp folder and choose Delete.
  12. In the confirmation dialog that appears click Yes.
  13. If you are unable to delete the Temp folder, close all programs, especially those in the Notification area ("System Tray") of the Windows Task bar and repeat step 11.
  14. Restart your computer.
Windows Vista and Windows 7:
  1. Choose Start > Computer
  2. In Computer, open the "C:" drive.
  3. Open the Users folder.
  4. Double-click the folder titled with your username.
  5. If you see an AppData folder, skip to step 10. If you don't see an AppData folder, proceed to the next step.
  6. Choose Organize > Folder and Search Options.
  7. Click the View tab.
  8. Select the option to "Show hidden files and folders." (In Windows 7 this option will be called "Show hidden files, folders, and drives").
  9. Click OK.
  10. Double-click the AppData folder to open it. If Windows needs your permission to continue click Continue.

2. Completely remove iTunes and QuickTime
For Windows XP, follow instructions in Remove and Reinstall iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP.
For Windows Vista or Windows 7, follow instructions in Remove and Reinstall iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista.
Note: Songs you purchased from the iTunes Store or imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes.
3. Install the latest version of iTunes
Once you have completed the above steps to Empty your Temp directory, Completely remove iTunes and QuickTime, and Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer, you can install the latest version of iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download.
Additional troubleshooting Make sure you have administrator-account access To install iTunes or QuickTime software, you need to be logged in as an administrator on the computer. If you're not sure if you have administrator-account access, contact the owner of the computer or your system administrator.
Get the latest Windows updates The first thing to do when troubleshooting an installation issue on a Windows computer is make sure you have the latest Microsoft Windows updates installed—to get the latest updates, go to the Microsoft Windows Update page.
iTunes and QuickTime software for Windows require Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista with latest Service Pack installed.
Disable other conflicting software In Windows, some background processes can cause issues for other programs and processes. These conflicts can prevent applications such as iTunes and QuickTime Player from installing. Make sure your folder names don't contain strange characters If the iTunes installer (iTunesSetup) is not responding or appears frozen after launching the installer then the folder where the installer is stored may contain unusual characters. If you notice that the iTunes installer or stored in a folder like this, either rename the folder or move the iTunes installer to another location such as the Desktop before launching.

How can i turn off the compatibility mode of my itunes


First u need close the itunes.
1: Windows XP and Windows 2000: On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2: Windows Vista and Windows 7: On the Start menu, click Computer.
3. In My Computer, open the C:\ drive (or whichever disk your Windows is installed on). Open the Program Files folder or "Program Files (x86)" if you are using a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7).
4. Open the iTunes folder.
5. Right-click on the iTunes application (iTunes or iTunes.exe) and from the shortcut menu, click Properties.
6. Click the Compatibility tab.
7. Deselect the checkbox under Compatibility mode if it's selected.
8. Click OK.
9. Open iTunes and play a song.
This should take care of the problem.

Can't get itunes to work


The error message “The folder iTunes cannot be found or created”. It was referring to the My Music directory that is usually located in the My Documents folder on the partition containing the operating system. The iTunes software creates an iTunes folder in the My Music directory on first start and if that directory is not accessible it will throw the error message and fail to load.
Since this error is related to the My Music folder it is important to check the directory path of that folder in the Windows Registry. This is best done by using the shortcut [Windows R], typing [regedit] and hitting the [enter] key.
The fastest way of location the two locations that contain path information for the My Music folder is to use the search by pressing [F3] and entering [My Music] in the search box. A click on [Find Next] will start the search and reveal the two locations.
The test computer system did not have path information listed at all. This can be changed by double-clicking the My Music key in the Registry and changing the path to an valid path manually.
The two Registry locations that list the My Music path are the following two:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Make sure both point to a valid path on the system. Once the path has been changed iTunes will create the iTunes folder in that location and start up without this error message.

Please back up your registry before doing this. messing in the registry can make your computer stop functioning.

Make sure you follow the correct registry entry.

Disk is Locked Error


If the My Music folder is in the wrong location or incorrectly assigned in the Windows registry, you may see one of the following error messages:
  • "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."
  • "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the Music folder."

If you see one of the above errors, follow these steps to troubleshoot this:
  1. Verify the location of your Windows XP My Music folder. The default location for this folder is
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music
    If you do not have this folder at the default location and have not moved it to another location, consider creating one inside your My Documents folder.
  2. Download and install Tweak UI from the Microsoft PowerToys website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx Note: This utility is for Windows XP only. Please review the system requirements before installing.
  3. Once you have installed Tweak UI, open it from the Start menu.

Connecting ipod to a new laptop


You can actually (or could have) transfer the songs from your
Laptop & iPod by using you iPod like a removable
Hard Disk Drive

Here is the Apple sanctioned method:

Note: While you can use the Transfer Purchase From iPod option under the File menu to copy iTunes Store purchases from the iPod to another computer you can't transfer songs from other sources from the iPod library to iTunes

So you'll need to follow the steps below to use iPod as a hard disk to transfer music files from one computer to another. This process will require the use of iTunes 7 on all computers. Any computers running iTunes 6 or earlier will need to be updated to follow these steps.

Once you have the files transferred, you'll need to authorize any iTunes Store content. If you won't be using your old computer, you'll want to deauthorize it.

Important: Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats), so you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod to move your music to a Windows PC.
Switch the iPod to manual update and enable disk use The first thing you need to do is make sure have configured your iPod to enable disk use. To do this:
  1. Open iTunes on your old computer.
  2. Connect your iPod to your old computer and wait for it to appear in iTunes.
  3. Select your iPod in the Source pane under the Devices section to display your iPod preferences in the main library window.
  4. Click the Summary tab in the main iTunes window.
  5. Click the Manually manage music button. Changing from automatic updating to manual puts a check mark by Enable disk use. A message says:
"Disabling automatic update requires manually unmounting the iPod before each disconnect."

If you need to copy from old computer:
Copy iTunes folder to iPod To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your iPod:
  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Locate your iPod:
    Mac OS X: On the desktop
    Windows: In My Computer
  3. Locate your iTunes folder:
    Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
    Windows: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
  4. Drag the iTunes folder to the iPod. This can take a while if you have a lot of songs.

  • When the copy completes open iTunes.
  • Click on the iPod in the Source pane
  • Click the Eject button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.
  • Disconnect the iPod from the computer when the "Do not disconnect" message no longer appears on the iPod screen.

Copy music to new computer To copy all your music files (including the library file that holds all your playlists and other settings) to your new computer:
  1. Locate your Music folder (Mac OS X) or your My Music folder (Windows) on your new computer:

  • Open iTunes
    There you go. All your music, playlists, and other information like play counts and ratings have all been moved from your old computer to your new one.
