Hello: I've purchased a while ago a 185 artista with little instruction and or time to do what I dreamed to do>now I want to proceed with the embroidery> I need your help to make the pc work with the machine. >the software of serial port to pc is downloaded in my laptop >I have been informed to download an updated version of a program and than my computer required adobe that I had in my laptop but not the "right' one and I don't know which software is needed for the bernina. >Also the connection from the pc to machine I purchased one from Radio Shack and I'm not sure if that is part of my problem. I want to move on from here and I need your help. Every class for the hoopsisters is costing me - I end up using the shops machine not mine. I'm 4 blocks behind due to not being able to use my own machine at home. please help joan eident 978 251 4229

Hi joaneident,

The issue that you are getting with your Bernina Artista 185 is due to outdated software. You'll get a message "Wrong Software Version" because it is no longer supported at all. This is most often seen immediately after your 185-165 machine has been updated to the latest version of the firmware. Since the machine update only puts new information on the machine itself, and not on your computer, the driver files that the programs use to send designs through the serial port to the machine are not updated at the same time, leading to this error message.

Normally, this message is received when you are trying to send from an older version Artista or Artlink to a newer firmware machine. Your computer is using a driver that can only send information to an older firmware version machine. Now that the machine's firmware has been upgraded, you need to upgrade your software.

The most current software for your Bernina Artista 185 are:

  • BERNINA artista software Editor/Auto-Designer and Designer Plus is v4.0V
  • BERNINA artista Editor Lite is v5.0J
You can only get newer versions on a CD from your Bernina dealer. You may get the most updated version of Adobe Flash Player by clicking on this link.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Need to change stitch density

Hi Debbie,
I found the command for this change in the Features menu called "Balance" and it has a "b" symbol. In the ARtista 185 instruction manual this appears on page 30 so probably around there in your manual too.
Manual says
"Balance - touch symbol to open balance screen, correct forwards and reverse stitches, correct sideways motion stitches.
If you dont' have a manual you might want to download the 185 from the Bernina website, the link is

Hope this helps you to resolve your issue.

I can't remember how to sew a button hole....lost the manual . I don't remember what to "push" to get the machine to proceed through the "4 steps" of the programmed button hole.

I have a 180e, but cant put my hand on the manual tonight to clarify this issue for you.
From memory though, you need to go into the button hole button option, & look for stitch #60. The button sew application is automatic & its recommended that the #18 button foot be used.
As I said, that is from memory. Will check my manual asap & will clarify anything if needed, but I'm pretty sure thats the procedure, as I sewed buttons not that long ago. Hope this helps you.
