Question about Zoom H4 Handy Recorder

Open Question

My zoom h4 turns itself off during recording, and often when I power it up it goes directly to one of two screens: either the usb/ audio input screen, or the 'goodbye, see you!' screen. Can't even get it to turn on properly much less record. Only 2 years old. Very annoying

If you are using a Mac running Leopard (Sys 10.5), you need to upgrade the H4  firmware from Zoom website
http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/h4.php

You will need an external SD card reader.

Hi,

The manual for the H4 is very comprehensive, and there are default settings for many areas of the recorder. Check the
4 track mode setting are proper.
Here is the link to the manual:

or

Sometimes the solution is to update the firmware. The
firmware is corrupted.so you need to install a new one.

Here is the link to directions and the download update:

I thinks so we can copy it i am not sure about this i have not tries it.First transfer the file to PC and then copy it back to

SOURCE: zoom H4 recorder ver 1.30

Hi. Not sure you still are in need of a solution but since my machine was doing the same thing last night, and I was able to solve it, I thought I'd post anyway.
For my machine, which has a more current OS than yours (mine is 2.20 I believe), I was receiving the same message after transferring material onto the computer. What needed to happen was to reformat the card. If you press "menu", the click on "file" you should have an option to reformat the card. It worked for me and it now works.
Hope that helps!

My Zoom H4 Handy Recorder will not power on?

The H4 has a problem with the inside back circuit board disconnecting from the main board. For that you have to take it apart.
Pretty easy for anyone technically inclined. If I remember, 4 screws.
Carefully, of course. Inside you will find the back board (where the power and audio inputs are) unplugged from the main board.
Plug back in, and put some kind of piece of rubber or even cardboard (I did that) retainer to put pressure on and avoid this happening again.
It is a design problem, I had to find out myself.
Hope this helps, please let me know...
Enjoy !

Can't get my XLR cord with mic to work in either 1 or 2 inputs. But my guitar works pluged into the inputs. Cord and mic is good.

Check to make whether your microphone requires phantom power. If it does you must use a balanced mike cable. Check page 31 of the owners manual for input settings and page 79 for phantom power settings. The manual is here:http://s3.amazonaws.com/samsontech/related_docs/H4_manual.pdf

Zoom H4 does not power up on battery power.

Probably two years too late, but I recently got a used H4 and it was having this same issue. Upon reading the documentation, it seemed as though it required a specific type of AA batteries. If you update the firmware (mine was 1.3) to the latest version (currently 2.4), you can toggle the battery type under the menu (most likely alkaline is what you want). It also added lots of other great features!

H4 isn't recognised by my Mac as an audio device of any kind. It doesn't even connect properly.

There is a page at http:// www.zoom.co.jp/english/download/software/h4.php that may help you. It is supposed to fix the usb audio interface problem. Hope this helps.
