i think you are referring to the damper units. they are basically shock absorbers so you were on the right track. they are very easy to fit, i think it is a nut or nut and bolt either end same as most car shocks. i would recommend replacing the pair though, as they have both done the same work and if one has failed then the other is probably not going to be too far behind.
i had one of these dampers go on my machine and managed to change the pair in well under an hour.

How to stop drum wobbling

The drum needs a certain amount of play, but there is a bearing at the back that can fail. One thing to check is that your machine is level front to back and also left to right. In addition, make sure that all four feet are in equal contact with the floor.

My Duet Washer is making loud noise during spin cycle and has plastic shavings, from front tub rubbing i assume.

Hi, it could be your drum bearings are gone the drum would wobble slightly. A way of checking is , machine unplugged put one hand at bottom front and one hand at top front edge and push up and down if it clunks quite badly then your bearings on the drum shaft are needing renewed. You also have a shock absorber for steading the drum this can also fail. The absorber is very hard to compress so if its easy to compress then it needs re-newed.

My wash machine is make a knocking sound in the back of the tub in spin cycle. I took the back cover off and a piece of the plastic cover around tube broke off something between the tub and cover hitting...

Hi, I will try to give you some general tips. If you wash things that can not spread out evenly inside the drum, like mats pillows etc. Disable the high spin and drip dry your items or squeeze out the water by hand.
If the drum swings from side to side when rotating, one of the shock-absorbers inside the machine may be worn out, broke or loose.
If you open the lid, grab the drum and move it a bit back and forth and side to side (not rotating) it should not swing easily but with a damped resistance when the absorbers are ok.
An other experience I have made is the balancing of the feet. I had a new machine that alway moved around during the high spin, even thou I have made an extra flat surface for it to stand on. I could recognize a bumping noise from the feet.
When I pressed down the left or the right front corner with my hand a little, the bumping stopped. Then I adjusted the corresponding foot down and fine tuned it until the bumping disappeared while spinning.
Since then my machine has not moved an other mm (= 1/25").
So equal down force from the feet and no play under any of them is essential to deep it from moving around.
Hope this can help you too.

Loud in spin cycle/throws oil

If the pulley wobbles, it sounds like a bad bearing, and that could account for the oil/grease. One more thing you might check, mine acted bad in the spin cycle, but mine was the leveling spring at the bottom of the drum. The way to tell from the top is if the drum tends to lean forward instead of being centered when sitting. Good luck.

Spinning cycle makes a lot of noise

See if the tub will spin freely by hand. Spin it both ways. It should coast silently to a stop. If you hear a dragging sound or it doesn't spin smoothly look for a sock between the inner and outer tubs. Start looking in the upper left side at about the 10:00 and 11:00 positions. That's where i usually find them.
If it seems to spin ok then see if the inner tub wobbles separately from the outer drum. Push up on inner basket from inside. The outer drum and inner tub should rise and fall as a solid piece. If you feel a separation the bearings need replaced or the spider assembly has broken. Only a complete teardown can tell which. Hope this helps.

I have a ge frontload washer and it recently started making a really loud noise when in spin mode. It sometimes bangs the side also. What's going on?

It could be a few things that could be wrong with it. With the washer empty does the wash drum sit centered within the door? Also the drum should be level and not sag down or up. If it does, then it could mean the the springs or shocks are broken. You can check shocks by removing the two screws on the front bottom access panel. There are two shocks, and are mounted on the bottom of the the drum.

If the drum sits level and centered in the door, turn the drum by hand and feel how it spins. It should spin true and quietly without any kind of thumping or scaping noise. If it makes a thumping or scraping noise, or it wobbles as it spins this could mean the the spider arms that support the wash drum are broken. If it does not make any abrupt noise when you spin it by hand but when the machine is in a spin cycle, it spins with a loud roar like a jet plane is landing in your laundry room, then the bearings are gone.

It can be very expensive to have these machines servied since the machines needs to be taken apart to get the drum/bearing assembly. If you are handy, you can replace the bearing and seal for less than $100 in parts, but, if the spider assembly is broken, the parts alone can cost as much as a new washer.

My washer when it is on the spin cycle wobbles back and forth almost like it is off track somewhere buts its not off balance. It hits each side of the washer like its lose, and instead of spinning around...

When my washer did that, I found that the shocks that hold the tub were bad...

Check out this tip I wrote about the noise and vibration that front load washers can make..

Washer won't spin at high speed....makes loud clunking noises

You probably have a broken shock on your washer. The front loaders have two shocks on them to stabilize the drum when it spins. Over loading the machine will cause these to break. Luckily they aren't too much to replace, only around 30 dollars each. They are quite a pain though to change out. When you remove the back panel of the washer you will see the shocks. Most likely you have one broke, maybe both though. Don't use it though until you get them changed out. It will just do more damage to the washer. If you have any other questions let me know and let me know if this was helpful to you. Good luck and I am glad that I could help you.
