Question about Oregon Scientific Electric PTO Clutch for Cub Cadet, MTD and Warner

1 Answer

After being parked for the winter, the pto on my lt 1045 won't work. I checked the seat wiring, found a little corrosion and cleaned the contacts. It's 3 years old and has run fine until now, it has 84 hours on it. The battery did discharge this year a few times, but seems to take a charge ok and starts.

You will need to use multimeter to test few possibilities, to confirm the problem. You need to test for power at the PTO switch with the key on, find the hot lead. If it's not hot anywhere check for a blown inline fuse. If it is, raise the button and test for power at another terminal. If not, the switch needs replacment. If the switch works, test for power at the connector 6 inches off the PTO clutch. Make sure you have a full 12 Volts going to the clutch before replacing it. -------
Also check the wiring connections; from primary to relay, from switch to relay, from relay to clutch, etc. Also, I would check the switch contacts and the engage switch itself. It may be defective.---------
There is a safety switch on the transaxale. Also check the wiring to safety switch. If its got loose or short, rewire it.Easiest way is to remove the right rear wheel. You will see the tab, a terminal pluged on it- and possibly a broken wire hanging there. ------------ Also do you hear any click, when you start. If you hear the PTO click when you turn the ignition on, sounds like the PTO button is pulled out like you were engaging the blades. The engine will not start if the PTO button is pulled out. ----------- Also check the fuel shut of solenoid. If its faulty or clogged, it will not let the fuel to run and engine will not start due to lack of fuel.------------ This troubleshooting will help, to pin point the problem.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

Power seat has lost power, right side power windows lost power. Can not find the fuse or relay.

there is a bulletin at gm site in regard to this problem. check the wiring near the parking brake ratchet teeth for damage, also check under the drivers seat where the seat bottoms out wiring could be pinched there or the drivers side door sill.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1734688&psdid=1058&evc=sm#ss1-1734688">Condition/Concern:

There have been reports of either the MBEC 1 or LBEC 1 maxi fuse blown intermittently and unable to locate a short to ground.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1734688&psdid=1058&evc=sm#ss2-1734688">Recommendation/Instructions:

If after normal diagnostics no shorts can be found the below items have been reported:
  1. <LI type=1>"MBEC 1" Maxi Fuse 50 Amp (SI Documenticon1.png ID # 1242532). If no shorts are located on circuit 642, inspect circuits 1340 after the "Rt Door" circuit breaker 25 amp and circuit 1440 after the "Seat" circuit breaker 30 Amp (SI Document ID # 1242687).
    • Inspect circuit 1340 shorted to ground near the right I/P support bracket.
    • Inspect circuit 1340 or 1440 shorted to ground on the support bracket for the I/P relay block.
    • Inspect circuit 1440 shorted to ground under or in either front seat.
    • Inspect circuit 1440 shorted to ground near the parking brake pedal assembly. The short may only occur if the parking brake pedal is depressed.
  2. "LBEC 1" Maxi Fuse 50 AMP (SI Document ID # 1242532).- If no shorts are located on circuit 42 inspect circuit 1240 after the "Lt Door" circuit breakericon1.png 25 amp (SI Document ID # 1242687).
    - Inspect circuit 1240 shorted to ground near the parking brake pedal assembly. The short may only occur if the parking brake pedal is depressed.
Note: Replacement of the circuit breaker is needed if a short to ground is found on circuit 3, 1240, 1340, or 1440.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

go to partstree.com and they should have wiring diagrams for your mower, should be a switch or something if the clutch works when you hook it to a battery (seat switch, pto switch, parking brake switch, even the neutral safety switches) also check your ground hook ups

The drivers seat won't move and the heated seats won't work on both sides. Where is the fuse?

Check underneath the seat for an inline fuse. It is a glass type fuse in a fuse holder that you have to push and twist to get out.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending on your engine.. Briggs and Stratton or Kohler there are 2 different seat switches that are used to power the PTO clutch. The seat switch can cause the PTO clutch to disengage anytime there is not at least 70 lbs in the seat.

The PTO drive wiring has a 30 amp fuse in it. If by chance a stick went through the belt and tore off the wires at the PTO clutch (Common failure) even after you repair the broken wire you still need to replace the fuse.

Check the PTO clearance gap. It should be 0.012 dis-engaged. Any other value and the clutch will not work correctly. Adjust the clutch if necessary.

There is a 2 pin Pigtail just off of the PTO Clutch that you need to check for voltage at the connector. Probe the back of the wires if you can and your looking for 12V DC under the following conditions.

BRAKE ON or tied down
KEY ON
SEAT (Briggs and Stratton engine only) Someone needs to be sitting on the seat.

Then Pull the PTO Switch out. You should hear the PTO Clutch CLICK. If you hear the click there is no need to check voltage. The PTO switch is a multi function switch and it is quite possible the PTO switch failed. I doubt that the PTO Clutch has failed as they normally give you some kind of noisy indication that they are failing and don't fail straight away.

So.. In short
Check PTO Switch (Red wires) to usually red or brown thru the switch
Check 30 amp fuse
Check PTO clutch wires near PTO clutch (They get torn from something traveling through the pulley)
Check PTO clutch clearance at 0.012
Check Brake switch for an audible click as you depress it some distance No click.. possible bad switch
Listen for Seat switch Click as you slowly add weight to the seat. No Click or any click and it can still be suspect due to the Briggs and Stratton installed engine ones have more than one function.. Ignition and PTO clutch power.

The actual wiring diagram is on page 35 of the owners manal that can be found here:
http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals/27245/CRAFTSMAN-Lawn,-Tractor-L9910386?brand_name_search=917273023

Lastly... check each of the mower deck blade bearings. A seized bearing can cause PTO problems.

Hopefully you have enough information to solve the mystery. If not just respond here and I will help you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Cub cadet dead as a door nail

I have the same mower. The wires do need to be connected. It is a safety feature on the cubs. The engine will not start if the electric PTO is engaged. I just went into the garage, pulled the pto lever out to engage, pushed down brake, tried to start and it would not start. I suggest reattatching the wires and trying it. Hope this helps.
