Question about Elna Sewing Machines
Sounds like top thread is not under tension at all. Rethread machine referring to your manual threading diagram and ensure the thread is passing between the tension discs.
If you lower the pressure foot and pull the top thread just before the needle, it should feel firm and not pull easily. If not, its not under tension.
What number is your tension dial set to, if you turn the dial while pulling the thread as above, can you feel any difference in the resistance?
Also a good idea to clean the tension discs regularly, turn number to zero, then run the selvage edge of a piece of clean cotton offcut between the discs. Thread sheds fibres and dye particles and this can build up with time so good practice to clean this regularly.
It is possible that the top tension device has broken, they sometimes have a little spring in there which may have failed.
But try these things first, then if no luck, might be time for a service technician to take a look.
