Welcome to Fixya. Unfortunately if the hard drive is bad you wont be able to install and operating system on it. If you were asking for a software that can repair a bad hard drive the answer is none. The reason why Hard Drive manufacturer have RMA warranty is that if you send the hard drive on their service center then they will replace the hardware that is faulty or bad.

This is not a quick fix because a software cant fix a hardware problem.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

We have a Windows XP system on a 14 year old Dell computer.. We are desirous of transferring data from that system to a new computor. My husband purchased an Acomdata Hi-speed 2.0 external hard drive...

If both your Dell and the hard drive have USB ports you may be able to download directly. Other wise you may purchase an external drive and load the data to that. The external drive almost certainly will connect by USB.

Hi there, my packard bell external is slowing down my pc when I plug it in. Sometimes it doesn't read, if it does, it takes very long, otherwise I just receive an error

It sounds like your connecting an external storage device (Such as a hard-drive) over USB.

The device you purchased has not been formatted-- that is, the file-system isn't prepared, and when its connected your operating system is trying to "figure out" what the heck it is... eventually coming back with "I dunno..format it?"..

The answer is simple-- say YES.. Format the device. OR, open "My computer" and then plug in your device. You'll eventually see a drive letter appear (such as D: or E: or F:...etc-- just not C:). When it appears, right-click on the drive, and click "Format"... select "Quick Format", then "OK"... Wait a few seconds..and poof..your device will show quickly next time you use it, and you'll be able to store data on it.

Remove the hard drive and reseat (reconnect). Check BIOS. It must be listed! There is no going forward if it's not. Check boot order and make internal hard drive first. Save and restart.

Windows xp operating system

Remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to the USB hard drive adapter then connect it to a working computer's USB port. This computer will see the USB hard drive adapter and hard drive as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and files on the hard drive and copy the data files to the computer and to backup your files.

Is the PC you've used before is the operating system is windows Xp? If you've using windows Xp before then you've plug it in a windows 7 Operating system, it means your hard disc have no problem the operating system of your PC is different than before. Try to plug it in a windows Xp operating system then recover it in there then format it in a windows 7 operating system then, the windows Xp and windows 7 try to make a network place in the connection then share the hard disc files that you've recovered then copy and paste it in the newly format hard drive that formated in a windows 7 operating system.

Can you provide a step by step or idiot's guide (haha) to removing the hard drive in order to wipe it please?

  2. Open the Case...depending on the Make and Model of your computer this can either be an easy or diffiult task. If you've never opened your computer case, then I would consult your computer manufacturer on how to open it. On easy cases, there are a few screws at the back of the cover that connects it to the case and you'll need to remove those and then the side panels either slide of lift out.
  3. Once you have the case opened, you may want to ground yourself by touching a metal part on the case before touching the more sensitive areas of the computer components.
  4. Look toward the front of the case and you should see the CD ROM drive enclosure and somewhere nearby is the harddrive. It's a metal box about 3" by 5" and should be supported by guide rails on each side.
  5. In the back of the hard drive, you'll see two cables: a power cable and the cable that attaches to the motherboard.
  6. First detach the cable that goes to the motherboard.
  7. Then grab the power cable by the white connector that's plugged into the hard drive. You may need to squeeze both sides of the connector to pull it out of the hard drive.
  8. Once you have all the cables detached, you may need to take the screws out that connects the hard drive to the rails.
  9. Once those are removed the hard drive should slide out easily. I'll include photos of an IDE hard drive, so you can tell what a typical hard drive looks like. Remember it may differ a little from the one that I've posted.
