I'm sorry to disagree, but the usual problem with this symptom is a stuck iris in the lens assembly. With the camera on, try gently tapping the side of the lens area. The iris may be jarred loose. If not, then the camera needs to be opened and the iris assembly rebuilt. This is not a job for the novice. Expect a repair bill in the $150 range. There should be no parts required.

Maybe not a remedy for everyone but, I tapped all around the lense with a soft wood ruler stopping to turn the camera off and on periodically. I noticed a lot of sand, we live at the beach, came loose. It took me a little while to do this as I was being caeful not to damage anything else on the camera. Finally, the cap just opened and has ever since. Good luck.

The lens cover mechanism in these cameras is susceptible to debris and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.
My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.
