Question about D-Link (DI-784) Wireless Router

1 Answer

I installed my D-Link DI-784 six days ago. It's connected to a Dell 8100 running Windows 7. It worked fine until an hour ago, when it stopped broadcasting. The router is connected to a DSL modem. If I connect the computer directly to the modem, I get connectivity. When I connect the modem to the router to the computer, the status light shines without flashing, and no connectivity is apparent. I have disconnected everything, let it sit for a few minutes, and reconnected gradually (first power to modem, then telephone line to modem, then ethernet connection to modem; then power to router, then ethernet connection from modem to router, then computer to router.) This does not help. I purchased the router several years ago but did not use it until now, so the warrantee is expired. Can you help? Thanks

It is possible that a neighbor purchased a wireless access point that it on the same channel and they are competing. Change your wireless channel. You could also try a hard reset. Instructions at D-Link's website. Good luck!

Make sure you use the correct cable between the router and the D-Link. If you use the blue wire it won't work. The orange and orange white pair have to be swapped with the green- green/white pair on one end of the cable only. Usually, the cable is orange in color and is called a crossover cable.

I have DI-604 in line between Windows Vista computer and cable modem. Works fine. Bought DIR-615 (wireless). Several places instructions say, ""Insert the DIR-615 CD into computer and click Install Router....

Contrary to the many warnings not to install the router before starting the installation with the CD, I got the installation to complete only AFTER I installed the router inline thusly:

1. Power everything off.
2. Remove DI-604.
2. Install and connect 615 router to computer and to modem.
3. Apply power to router and modem.
4. Apply power to computer and wait until Windows loads.
5. Insert 615 installation CD.
6. Follow the directions.

I can access the router but not the internet on my secod computer. I put in the password and the network is connected but not the internet. I tried it with my old computer and it works.

go to start menu then type in run "ping yahoo.com -t"

If you get reply then your ip addreses is ok.
then you need to restart your dns service of computer.
For that go to start menu then type in run "services.msc"
then you see in right side "DNS CLIENT"
right click on it and stop then restart it again same way.
then restart computer then check.
If problem still arise then check ip sub net and gateway of other computer on which your working fine then set ip address again
Thanks for using fixya.

It sounds like there is a critical error in loading the operating system, most likely caused by a corrupted file or key in the registry. Your options are: A) Spend countless hours[days] troubleshooting and experimenting trying to repair, or B) back up your drive, wipe, and re-install. I would obviously go with option B, as it will save hours, if not days of your life. Here is the easiest route to solve. (Note: you sound like you know your way around computers, so I am assuming you've already tried booting into safe mode.)
Here are the steps to getting your files off and re-installing a fresh version of Windows 7 RC (it's free to test, remarkably stable, and will continue to work until June 2010)
1. Power off computer, unplug, remove battery. 2. Remove hard drive (here is a how-to: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/sm/hddrive.htm#wp1128924) 3. On a separate computer (obviously) download and burn Windows 7 to a DVD (get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx ) 4. Hook the hard drive you took from the e1505 to your secondary computer. It should be a SATA connection, which most newer computers i've seen contain those connections. So you should be able to plug it directly into a desktop PC. If not, dig out an external hard drive, pop out the screws, and hook up your SATA e1505 hard drive to the SATA connection in the ext hard drive, power the ext hard drive and plug the USB into your secondary computer. Either way you connect it, the computer will recognize it as a storage drive and you can simply copy the whole thing to your computer for sorting out later. 4. Once backed up, and your Win7 DVD is burned, pop that harddrive back into your e1505. 5. Turn on the laptop and put in the Win7 disk and start the install process. 6. Enjoy your fresh OS (and yes, it is compatible with windows xp programs -- just check the box for Compatibility under the right click-->properties) 7. transfer your back-up files to your e1505 8. crack open a beer and laugh at the hypothetical you that would still be beating his head in trying to figure out wtf file is missplaced or corrupted.
cheers!

You can try to reset your Router by using a pen or a paper click there is a little whole in the back of your router that you can click with a pen. This should restart the modem. If this doesn't work you can hold the reset button but this will restore the router to factory default settings
