Your fridge is probably suffering from a defrost circuit failure. One (or possibly more) of the following components has failed: 1) the defrost terminator or sensor, 2) the defrost heating element or 3) the defrost controller / timer. Items 1 & 2 should be found in the freezer compartment - behind the back wall. The 3rd item can often be found in the toe space at the bottom of the fridge - behind a kick plate or some other relatively accessible location.

The operation is as follows: The defrost timer runs constantly and about every 8 hours or so, it switches the power from the compressor and its associated controls (fresh food compartment t-stat, etc.) to the defrost circuit that consists of a heating element and a device called a defrost terminator. Power is applied for about 15 to 20 minutes during which time the defrost heater is energized IF the defrost terminator detects the evaporator coil compartment temperature is cold. When the defrost terminator detects that the heater has warmed the evaporator coil compartment to a temperature of about 50 degrees OR the timer has powered the defrost circuit for 15 to 20 minutes, the defrost circuit / heater de-enrgizes. Even if the heater is hasn't reached 50 degrees in the 15 -20 minutes, the timer switches from the defrost circuit back to the compressor through its controls once again. You'll need to determine if 1) the timer is timing, 2) the timer switch can actually send power to the defrost circuit, 3) the defrost terminator can close when cold - or if it is stuck open, or 4) the heater works.

If you don't know how to work with electrical meters and tools or are not comfortable working in tight spaces (back wall of the freezer) with live electric parts, you should call a repair person. Also, refrigerants are very dangerous. If allowed to escape from the tubing, coils, etc. there is a very real danger of instant frostbite if it comes in contact with your skin. You can be blinded if it contacts your eyes. These above reasons make me believe that this is a pretty complicated DIY type job and really isn't a good one for a beginner to attempt. On the plus side, parts are relatively inexpensive, and a qualified person should be able to quickly diagnose the problem. Labor rates and standard parts markup can bring this repair up into $200 and up range, however.

If / when you do call for service, having the freezer emptied & defrosted already - will save the cost of defrosting time by the repair person.

I hope this was helpful and good luck. Please rate my reply. Thank you.

Check the door gasket for a leak. Air entering past the gasket will form ice.

Bottom fridge compartment is warm (60deg). Top freezer working good. Is cold control unit replaceable by customer?

it may not be your cold colntrol. it is more likely the defrost terminator or the heating element (both located in the freezer section) or the defrost timer (located in the refrigerator section). you most likely have an ice buil-up on the evaporator coil that is preventing proper circulation of air accross the coil and into the refrigerator section.

The freezer side is working but no cold temperature in the fridge section of our side by side door with water and ice dispenser kitchaid fridge. Wonder what the problem is?

Hi
If the refrigerator is in defrosting mode, the freezer compartment temperature will be less cold than usual. Wait 20 minutes, and you should be able to feel cold air blowing in the bottom of the compartment. If you have frost on the freezer coil, you probably have a defrost problem. Your freezer should go into a defrost cycle about twice a day. When this happens the compressor and fans shut off and a defrost heater in the freezer coil will turn on heating away the ice. This usually last 10 - 20 minutes. If the defrost coil doesn't defrost it will become a solid block of ice and this will in turn block the air from blowing into your refrigerator compartment. There are several things that can go wrong with the defrost cycle such as the defrost timer, defrost heater, or the defrost termination thermostat.

Leaking kenmore side byside Refridgerator . It seems to leakout the freezer door side. Ice builds up at the bottom or floor of the freezer.

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model when ice is gone take back cover off find drain hole and clean

Ice melted and fridge not cold enough kenmore 363.50622000

Several things possible - fan in freezer side not running, defrost thermostat not working, if fan runs and cuts off & on, then the defrost heater strip could be out, but check the defrost timer under fridge; not cycling, you can manually turn to see if fan cuts off and on. If you have "ice shelf" in coils on freezer side then no air circulates in freezer and over into refrigerator side.

Viking refrigerator with bottom freezer always running

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Refrigerator is barley cold, still makes ice, condensation inside of frostless freezer

Hi: The fact that it still makes ice tells me the freezer is a zero degrees. When you said condensation in the freezer did you mean frost? If your defrost heater fails it will cause the frost free freezer to build up frost. The frost will build up and block the vent that supplies the cold air to the fresh food. The defrost heater is behind the metal wall at the back of the freezer, at the very bottom. A glass tube with a metal coil in it. The coil can break and stop the defrosting. Replace that. Use a hair dryer to melt the frost from behind the panel. All of it top to bottom. You need to remove all the frost to free up the airways. I hope this helps, Jeff

Freezer works, frig does not. Also ice build up in freezer coil

I just worked on a FF801W which is supposed to be very similar. The defrost heater in mine was of the glass tube type and located under the evaporator. There was a bimetal thermostat clipped to the top of the evaporator and a thermal fuse (sealed in a clear plastic tube) nearby. The connections were behind a little plastic cover (2 screws) in the back wall just above the evaporator.

Mine was iced up like yours and I had to defrost it with a hair dryer. All the defrosting parts in the freezer compartment turned out to work so I now suspect the defrost timer (down by the compressor). I've marked it and I'm waiting to see if it's turning.
