SOURCE: my brother mfc 420 cn says unable to clean see

If you look at the Brother website you will find a trouble shooting guide for your machine.

In the guide, for the error you quote Brothers guidance is to check for a stuck piece paper, however it also states that if the printhead is hard over to one side (righthand side if memory serves me correct), then to contact Brother. If you do so, Brother will tell you it needs to be serviced by a Brother agent, which will likely cost you more than a new one !

If it isnt a stuck piece of paper, the problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset, again by a Brother agent.

However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code somewhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.

I am unable to copy, i keep getting the message "Unable to print 36"

The error message is an indication that the machines ink absorbers are almost full. The ink absorbers hold liquid and dried ink after it has been purged from the print head. These absorbers can control enough ink for the expected life of the machine.

46 means the ink absorber box is full, it only costs around $10.00 to replace but you need to get into service mode to reset the counter. I'm not allowed to give out that info...

MFC-420CN error "Unable to Clean"

Unable to clean comes up as well when the ink absorber is full. It won't let you print or
clean until a fresh absorber is installed, as it could leak all over inside and out. A shop has to do the repair.

Unable to Init. 46

Your Ink Absorber box is full. The machine cleans its print nozzles by blasting them out with ink; it collects that waste ink and pumps it into a plastic box filled with thick, felt pads. After a certain number of cleaning operations, it decides it's not safe to squirt more ink into the box and gives this Error 46. Replacing the ink absorber box and flushing box and resetting the purge counter is fairly complex. Maybe someone has instructions all typed out, but your best bet is probably to take it to a Brother tech.

Cleaning

This one will cost money, sorry. Inkjet machines periodically clean their nozzles by squirting ink through them, and in the MFC 420 that ink is collected an pumped into big plastic box filled with thick, felt pads. The machine counts how much ink has been squirted into there, and at a certain count refuses to clean it's nozzles (or print) anymore. You need to replace the "Ink Absorber Box," which is only maybe $15, but getting the machine torn down to that point will require a technician. you need a new waist ink absorber box which can be purchased from a service partner near your home. see brother homepage of your country. After replacing you have to do a eeprom reset which can be found at TIPs here in the forum.
