I do not think they had a compression realese on a saw that small, it is more likly to be an issue with the starter, remove the screws and take away the starter does it pull easily off the saw? if it is ok try turning the engine with the flywheel, is the flywheel rubbing the ignition unit, the gap here should be 0.5mm.

i feel then this is how the machine is, running a 50-1 fuel oil mix might help a little, when it is running does it run well?

  • dawillems Apr 11, 2011

The engine turns easy with the spark plug removed, I see this as a compression problem.

  • Andrew White Apr 11, 2011

I fear the only thing left is to de coke the piston crown, assuming it has the correct spark plug in, there is no more you can do to decrease the compression

  • dawillems Apr 11, 2011

How do I decoke the piston crown??

  • Andrew White Apr 11, 2011

The easiest way without removing the cylinder, is to remove the muffler, bring the piston down to bottom dead centre, now carefully scrape any carbon from the top of the piston with a suitable tool via the the exhaust port, shake any loose carbon out through the exhaust port, use compressed air if available to blow it out.

  • dawillems Apr 13, 2011

I scraped the top of the piston and then brought the piston to top dead center and sprayed some internal engine cleaner through the spark plug hole, replaced the spark plug and let it soak for overnight, then I cut a test log for 5 minutes. That helped. Thank you for the help.

Starter rope hard to pull. It's not smooth and takes a lot of effort.

Make sure the brake is off and retest. If brake is off and still difficult to pull, remove the side cover, chain, bar and retest. If still not right (remove sparkplug), remove the muffler and make sure that the spark arrest screen is clean and verify that the cylinder and piston look clean and smooth by looking into port. You can clean the cylinder by spraying wd40 and pulling the rope untill it all comes back out. Verify that the rope pulls smoothly before you reinstall the spark plug. If all looks good, reinstall muffler and retest. If the compression is normal, it should be rather hard to pull thru the compression stroke. Reinstall bar and chain for final test.

I have a wild thing. the rope pull starter is very hard to pull. when i take the spark plug out it is easy to pull. the saw was not used for about 4 years until yesterday. it ran for about 45 minutes fine....

one piston ring has expanded now having no or a very fine gap increasing the compression ratio causing this to happen. When the spark plug is removed it is very easy to pull on the cord in any means. A inspection is due of this engine or a new chain saw is needed

Check to see if you have the chain oriented correctly - it is east to put them on backward without realizing it. Th3e teeth should point forward, with the anti - kickback lug in front of the tooth. Let me know if this helps!!

Start at 1.5 CCW form lightly seated then tune for performance like this:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.

I think your starting procedure may be the cause of flooding. Flooded is the #1 cause of hard starts in 2-cycle engines. Read carefully the recommended start in your manual. most miss the second note. It should be similar to this (read 3, read it again):
Warm start in the manual says 1/2 choke BS. Close choke, (sets fast idle) open choke, pull rope.
Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
If you still have trouble reply as you did before. I will get back to you. HTH

Recoil spring on homelite chain saw doesn't retract pull rope

Easy suggestion would be to get new spring coil. Is it older saw? Have had to change mine on poulan saws before.
