It's not the cable that's to blame, it's the disk itself, it had probably gotten corrupted. this is a serious matter, but you can try to fix it up by

  1. running error check (go to my computer> right click disk>go to properties>click on "tools" tab>click "check now">select both options>click ok and follow instructions)
  2. formatting (in my computer, right click disk> format >start)
Remember that you could already have lost any data held on the disk because of the power outage. Also the second option will erase any data on the disk completely.

If none of these work, or if the disk doesn't show up on my computer at all, you are going to have to give it in to the shop u bought it from to try and repair it.

This is a good lesson that you should remember; never use a computer without a UPS (also called "battery" but this is a wrong term.) That will hold a few minutes electricity enough for you to shut down the computer.

Hard disks get damaged if the power is suddenly cut off without any warning; when you shut down your computer, it tells the hard disk to move the hard disk's moving parts into a safe orientation. in fact, if you listen to a disk while shutting off power from the switch, you'll hear a click sound. this is damaging.

My mac OS X 10.4.11 won't let me drag and drop into Seagate Expansion 500GB - says it can't be modified!!! Help please.

If the drive is formatted with NTFS (the format used by recent Windows operating systems), then you won't be able to write to that file system.

What you will need to do is reformat the drive to HFS or FAT32.

If you will be moving the drive between a Windows and a Mac, then you'll have to format with FAT32. If you will only be using the drive on your Mac or other Macs, then format the drive with HFS.
NOTE: unless you copy the existing files off of the drive first, you will lose all data on the drive.
To do this, do the following:
  • Copy all existing data off of the Seagate drive to a safe location
  • Unmount the Seagate hard drive
  • go to your Machintosh HD / Applications / Utilities folder and start "Disk Utilities"
  • Select the Seagate drive from the list
  • click on the Erase tab
  • Select the Format. For HFS choose "Mac OS Extended (journaled)" for FAT32 choose "MS-DOS FAT"
  • Type a name for your volume in the Name: field
  • Click the "Erase..." button and allow the Disk Utilities program to format the drive
  • Once the drive is formatted, you will be able to save files to the disk.
Thanks for using FixYa and have a great day

SEAGATE ('www.seagate.com') offers a one-year warranty.
Copy all your files (onto another disk, or onto DVD-writable disks),
and then exercise the warranty for SEAGATE to repair/replace it, at no cost to you.

WHat you could do is test other usb ports on the system or you will have to remove the drive from the caddy and install it as a slave inside your pc and see if you can access the data,
If you can then you know its the caddy at fault

Here is another possibility that i found on another forum

"I was playing around in Device Manager, unplugging and replugging the hard drive. Finally I found that although it wasn't listed under Disk Drives or Removable Storage
, it was listed under USB controllers. It had a little x on the icon. Upon right clicking it I found that it had somehow become disabled on my computer. I'm not sure how that happened. I know I didn't do it."
or you can try this
Try this fix for missing usb ports by JohnWill

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function.

Data Recovery from Seagate Desktop Expansion 500GB External Hard

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.
https://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.
