You will not only need to change the circuit breaker but you will also most likely have to change the wire size running from your machine/disconnect/receptacle. For 125 amps you will need at least 2AWG copper wire

I would tend to agree with "Tripleauto". If you do not disconnect the electrical supply to the house, you run the risk of having 240 volts at up to about 75 KVA coursing through your body. Needless to say, before the transformer blows out or someone cuts off the power, your corpse will be mostly ash. Call the power company to co-ordinate having the power turned off while you or your electrician do the work. Once the power is off, swapping out the main breaker is a relatively simple job, assuming you can find an exact replacement. If there is no exact replacement, as in the panel is fairly old and the breaker is no longer available, you will end up having to replace the whole panel or add a 125 amp breaker in a separate enclosure in an accessible location between the meter socket and the breaker box, preferably within reach of the breaker panel. The International Residential Code requires a disconnct where there are more than six breakers needed to turn off all power to the dwelling. Check with your local Building Code office before doing anything.

The total panel ampacity should be rated first by your load, then by the main breaker. if you are feeding it out of another box, it will probably be a double 100amp. In that case you will probably use 100amp SER cable.

depending on the current requirements of the unit running, check the application of the circuit breaker as it may not be sufficient to run the unit --again an electrician will be able to determine the requirement

Wire wont fit in new coleman breakers

Hi - I'm an electrican and would like to help.

If the wire you're trying to install on a circuit breaker doesn't fit - then something is wrong. Typically, circuits are designed around the amount of voltage and current a product requires. The voltage determines the combination of material & thickness of the insulation on the wire and the the amount of current (in amps) determines the size of the conductor or wire. The appropriate circuit protection (fuse or circuit breaker) is selected to protect the circuit from trying to deliver more current than the product requires (in the case of a fault, etc.) which would cause the wire to over heat and potentially cause a fire. So, if the product requires (for simplicity) 120 volts and 20 amps, a wire is selected with the proper insulation for 120 volts or more and conductor sized to carry no less than 20 amps. Aluminum and copper is expensive, so providing larger sizes than needed is a waste of resources and money. A #12 copper wire is suitable for this amount of amps. A circuit breaker rated for 20 amps is chosen. A 20 amp circuit breaker must be able to accept a wire capable of 20 amps - other wise it's not really a 20 amp circuit breaker. Most circuit breakers are designed to accept LARGER wires than needed - because often times circuits will need a wire that is one or two sizes larger due to the length of the circuit (how far the product is from the electrical panel).

If you're seeing a circuit breaker that will not accept the wire, the circuit breaker is probably the wrong size (and if you could force the wire in it - it would probably trip instantly when turned on) or someone has made a very expensive blunder when chosing the wire type and size for the circuit.

If the the latter is the case, simply connect a short length of the correct size wire to the oversized wire in an appropriate connector and secure to the circuit breaker terminal screw. otherwise, have a qualified person evaluate the situation. Be smart. Be safe.

A BR2100 circuit breaker is a 2 Pole 100 Amp (for the part number "BR2100", the "2" indicates the number of poles and the "100" indicates the amperage) circuit breaker. It can be installed in a single phase or three phase 120/240 VAC system panel that specifically lists the BR series breakers as acceptable for use.

A BR260 A BR2100 circuit breaker is a 2 Pole 60 Amp (the part number BR260, the "2" indicates the number of poles and the "60" indicates the amperage) circuit breaker. It can be installed in a single phase or three phase 120/240 VAC system panel that specifically lists the BR series breakers as acceptable for use.

It is not possible to have a BR2100 rated for 60 amps, 1 or 3 poles, or a BR260 rated for 100 amps, 1 or 3 poles.

It is not permissible to install any circuit breaker brand or type in any panel that does not specifically include it on a list of acceptable circuit breakers.

Circuit breakers are designed to carry 80% of the amperage rating.
To determine the load a circuit breaker can carry, multiply the circuit breaker amp rating by 80%.
This means that if you need to supply more than 80 amps, you cannot use a 100 amp circuit breaker. A higher rating is required. A BR2110 would be acceptable for loads greater than 80 amps, but less than 88 amps because the formula above says: 110 amp x 80% = 88 amps.

To determine the breaker size, determine the load (by measuring with a meter or obtaining amp rating of the load from the data plate) and multiply it by 125%. Using the same numbers in the example above; assume an 88 amp load. 88 amps x 125% = 110 amp circuit breaker. The 60 amp breaker is acceptable for up to 48 amps because 60amps x 80% = 48 amps. A 48 amp load needs a 60 amp breaker because 48 amps x 125% = 60 amps.

A 60 Amp breaker (three phase) powers an 125 amp main lug 3 phase panel is that k or do i need a bigger braker. the wires are #8 THHN.

The breaker that feeds the panel and the wire are what determines the rating. The panel has to be at least as high as the breaker. It can be more, and no problem.The problem I see is that the wiring is undersized for the 60 amp breaker. You should have #6 wires or change the breaker to a 50 amp. If that is not enough for your load, you must change the wiring. It also depends on the type of wire. THHN will have the largest amperage, but if it is TW, it will be lower. Rule of thumb would be #10-30 amp, #8-40-50 amp, #6-50-60 amp, #4-70-90 amp and #2-95-135 amp. There are other factors, such as derating etc. but if you wanted to increase to 100 amp, I would run #2 thhn. Hope this helps.

You probably should not replace a 50 and 75 with a 125. The problem is that although the 125 would have the capacity to supply the same current as the combined 50 and 75, each branch would be provided up to 125 alone, instead of the 50 or 70 that they were allowed before. That is, the 125 won't trip unless both branches exceeded their 50 and 70 amp limits simultaneously. If at any time one branch is drawing very little current, then the other branch would be delivered up to 125 amps. If it is OK that each branch can receive 125 amps alone, then a single 125 would be OK.
And if you have damage to the bus bar, you will have to replace the whole box.
On the other hand, if the existing wires will reach, you might be better off simply replacing all three boxes with one panel.

You can install anything, up to a 125 amp. Just do not go any higher amperage then that. Anything lower will work just fine but will limit the current to the amount of the size of the breaker.

Why does the electric breaker trip when my compressor wants to draw current?

The breaker is tripping because the circuit is overloaded. In the winter this is a common problem with a cold compressor at startup. If it is doing it in the summer then it may be you have too small wiring or too small a breaker for the circuit. A 20 amp breaker can handle 12 gauge wire up to 20 amp load. If you need more then you must have 10 gauge wire on a 30 amp circuit. A 240 volt compressor requires a 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire. What make and model compressor do you own? On the compressor it lists the load and requirements. Tell me the make an model and I can tell you the wiring requirements.
