you can go to smithcorona's website and check out the Office 2000 series manual found on their support page. Although probably not the right model (this one has a small one line screen) it may match all the functions you need to know about. I have a model 5F (78DS) and it helped me a great deal.
An eeprom is a memory chip inside the player. In this particular case, it contains data that basically tells your player how to set itself up after it has been powered up. You could try disconnecting the power cord for 15 minutes then try the unit again. Failing that the chip may have a bad connection to one of the pins or it may be faulty.
If you are tempted to open the unit, be careful because these components are sensitive to static, which means that touching bits inside even when the power is off can damage them unless you know what you're doing.
