That did not work. I kept plugging F buttons F1 F2 you get the picture, and on lucky F9 it went to a menu. It turns out to be Linux based and it gave me an option to delete personal settings. I figured it was not working at the moment so I did it and it wiped out the user updates an settings.

It is now working after wiping out the settings.

The Asus has an optional OS being Linux. The answer really did not help much as it was for Windows.

Hi There and Welcome to Fixya.

For us to assist you better, I would suggest if you can expound the problem further. Here are my questions (and suggestions) :

  • Does the system POST? - when you turn the computer on, do you see the black and gray letters (or the Asus) screen before you encounter the "light gray to black"?
  • What Operating system are you using? (is it Windows 7?)
  • Try to run 'system restore' in safe mode Here's how :
  1. Make sure that the computer is turned off and that your USB devices are removed (printer, flash disk) except for keyboard and mouse.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately hit the 'DEL' (some system it's 'F2) key repeatedly until you're in a different screen.
  3. Choose "Safe mode only" and press Enter
  4. Wait for it to go on safe mode
  5. Choose "Administrator"
  6. Wait for it to completely load
  7. (If you're using Win7), click on start button and type "system restore" then press Enter
  8. Click "next"
  9. Pick a date where everything was working fine then proceed on clicking "Next"
  10. Wait for the system restore to complete. System will restart when it's done.
If the above steps was of no help, then I strongly recommend for you to completely reinstall the Operating system for this computer. I have included the manufacturer's website if you need more information :

Troubleshooting asus eee pc 900 series acts like its gonna boot then my scream goes black. HELP

If your computer is less than a couple years old it should have its own recovery partition you can boot into. For Acer laptops it is usually pressing F9 just after starting the computer from off power, from there you should follow the steps to recover your operating system to an older time. Preferably the last time you used Windows Update (there should be a highlighted date in the calendar that pops up).
Also note that if F9 does not work look around the bottom of the screen when the Acer logo appears during startup to see what button is for System Recovery or something of the sort.
If this does not work or no option for system recovery is available please post back here and I will have more instructions

Asus Eee pc 900. Boots up but after booting only shows black screen. How do I fix this?

If you are only getting a black screen and you are sure it's booting (how do you know?), then the problem would be the incorrect video settings in Windows. In this case, you might try starting in safe mode and resetting the video adapter.
If you see stuff on the screen as the system boots but then it goes black, then it's definitely a Windows issue.
If you see nothing at all but hear the system starting, then it's a hardware issue involving the video card.

This pc is obviously losted one of main system 32 components, in order to fix that you can try with windows repair service, boot up you windows cd/dvd select repair windows, if this session works then you have fixed your problem, othervise, unfortunately you need to reinstall new fresh copy of windows.

Asus EEE PC 900A Linux- boot problem after downloading updates

Consider downloading a specific release of Ubuntu; eeebuntu. Download the ISO and then conenct an external DVD device to it, during the BIOS screen, choose the ESC button and boot from the external device.
This Ubuntu-specific group offers three kinds of ISO's (simple, super basic, and a loaded release), all of which allow all parts to work out of the box:

If this does not work, check the informal eeepc forums

After downloading updates my 900 locks up during reboot

I see a multitude of problems with these units online, I don't have one and will not pretend to know more than I do, but my opinion is that they are prone to software issues, and you can get a real nice laptop that will cause you far less problems for around the $300.00 range. This is just a suggestion, there is a driver pack That is available on the site in the support section, if you don't find it yourself I will look for it again, good luck
