Question about Boston Acoustics AVR7120

1 Answer

My BA AVR 7120 seems to work fine in stereo mode but when I switch to surround (i.e. Matrix mode) the sound cuts out from the speakers and sometimes the display disappears and the receiver goes into standby mode after which I have to turn off the power and turn it back on before the receiver will power up and play sound again. If I put it into stereo mode when the receiver turns back on, the receiver works fine. What's the problem and how can I fix it?

I don't think impedance is a problem because these are the same speakers I've used with the receiver since I purchased it 5+ years ago. I have Infinity's all the way around (Beta 50's for Front Speakers, TSS-1100 Center Channel, and RS-5 for Rear Speakers). Wiring should also not be an issue as I am using Monster Cable that is at least 16 gauge, but I'm pretty sure it's 14ga.

And yes, I realize that the surround speakers won't work in stereo mode but I brought that up because the overload protection does not seem to be kicking in while in Stereo mode and I've been running it that way for the last few days without any problems so now I suspect that there may be a problem either with the surround hardware, the wiring to the surround speakers, or a problem with one of the surround speakers that's causing a surge back to the receiver so do you have any recommendations on how I might narrow this down? I thought about disconnecting one surround speaker at a time to see which speaker (or speaker wire run) may be causing the problem. What would you recommend to try to troubleshoot this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, Sounds like the overload protection is cutting in. What impedance speakers do you have connected to the A and B speaker connections? If the impedance is too low the receiver will try to output too much current and the system will overload.

Also what volumes do you listen at? Is the receiver hot to touch before it shuts down? Check all your speaker wire connections and make sure no wires are touching other wires or speaker terminals at the receiver end and speaker end. What size speaker wire are you using?

It might be an issue but I have heard of problems like this when they used very thin wire. How long are the wire runs? Do you have any 14ga. wire you could try? 16ga wire should be the min. you should use on very short runs (unless you are using HTIB speakers).

No Surround Speaker Sound

If your surround mode setting is set to "Stereo," your surround speakers will not function. To remedy this, just change the surround mode. Push the "Surround Parameter" button either on your receiver unit or the remote control to access the surround mode settings. Push the "Select/Enter" button on your remote control to cycle through the surround modes: "Direct," "Stereo," "Dolby Pro Logic," "Mono Movie," "Rock Arena," "Virtual Surround," "Matrix" and "Video Game." Select any option except for "Stereo."

Makes sure that none of the speaker wires are shorted across the terminals at the speakers or at the amp. Just one stray strand can cause an amp to go into protection.

No sound

check speaker conections. disconnect all the speaker wires and use one speaker that you know that works and connect it to each channel one at a time. most surround sound stereos will not go into surround mode unless all the speakers are connected so make sure stereo is in 2 channel mode to start testing. check all fuses sometimes amp fuse is seperate from power circuit and denon uses relays in 99% of thier units.

Harman Kardon AVR 500 Only works in NON-Surff mode ?

This is a good indication that the surround processing section has a problem. This can be anything from a supply voltage being missing to a defective processing IC. Without testing inside the unit, it wil be difficult to determine. With surround procesing turned off, the entire section is bypassed. This is why standard stereo mode sounds OK. The static sound is digital noise and can be poor processing or a bad D/A converter IC.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Can not get 3 speakers on my samsung home theater to work!

There are a few settings that will just give you a stereo output. The first one is with the Pro Logic II. If you press the PLII Mode button on the remote it will go through a series of settings from MUSIC ➞ CINEMA ➞ PRO LOGIC ➞ MATRIX ➞STEREO ➞ MUSIC. Pro Logic setting will only produce sound from the front speakers and Stereo from the front speakers and the sub. Put it on Matrix for 5.1 surround sound.
Also for speaker settings follow the instructions below.
Signal outputs and frequency responses from the speakers will automatically be adjusted according to your speaker configuration and whether certain speakers are used or not.
In Stop mode, press the MENU button.
Press the Cursor down button to move to Audio and then press the ENTER button.
In the SPEAKER SETUP, press the ENTER button again.
Press the Cursor button to move to the desired speaker and then press the ENTER button.
For C, SL, and SR, each time the button is pressed, the mode switches alternately as follows : SMALL ➞ NONE.
For L and R, the mode is set to SMALL.
SMALL : Select this when using the speakers.
NONE : Select this when no speaker is connected.
Press the RETURN button to return to the previous level.
Press the EXIT button to exit the setup screen.
It also seems that with this system, if you are on 5.1 surround but your music source is only in stereo, you will only hear stereo.

Rear and Centre speakers not working

The system comes with l remote which provides controls for "Power", "Master Volume", "Bass (Subwoofer) Volume" and "Matrix Mode" . Matrix mode allows you to spread stereo sound to all speakers where your sound card may not have the ability to do so.
I find that the "Stereo Surround" setting works best as opposed to the recommended "CMSS" setting

I have an Harman kardon receiver (avr 310) it only plays in left and rigth speaker with surround off . I try everything to make it work in other but it can't .

Surround only works from a surround source such as Pro Logic.
If you are useing a regular stereo source with surround off, the sound will come only from L/R speakers (and sub woofer if used)
