Can't read data on WD external my book hard drive

Hello,

It seems that your WD hard drive is corrupted so
you are unable to access the stored files. But there is no need to worry since
it is very easy to recover data from corrupted WD partition by using Western digital partition recovery
software. Couple of days ago, even I was stuck under similar problem I tried
this software which really helped me to retrieve all my lost data.

All the best,

Linda William

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

My 1TB is not spinning. Is it possible to try out. I am technically qualified in electrical. The indicator is also dead. Any luck of recovering the data.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My WD 1tb external is no longer being read by my macbook pro, and verification and repair keeps failing. I can't erase it either.

Try out the hard drive on another computer, to verify if it's a hard drive issue or a computer issue. Then, get another hard drive, or USB stick, and try reading/erasing/recording on it from your MAC, to see if the computer is handling external data storage devices properly.
I'm not a MAC guy so I can't help out if it's your computer that's misbehaving... but if it's the hard drive that's misbehaving, then you may want to run a partition repair scan and also run a surface-level scan to make sure everything's ok. If you have a PC near by, get the WD Diagnostic utility here http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Western-Digital-Data-Lifeguard-Diagnostics.shtml and run an extended disk test. This will find and repair any logical problems with the hard drive. After the test is over, run a SMART scan too, that will tell you the physical state of the hard drive. If it points to some parameters that are off the recomended values you may want to get all the data off the drive. I'm sorry to say, but the 500GB-1TB Western Digital hard drives, especially the Green Line series, proved to be a very silky line, fragile, unreliable.
If you opt for a new hard drive, I suggest that you keep the WD casing, and stick a Samsung or a Seagate hard drive.

My WD My Book Essential 1TB External is not showing up on 'My Computer'. It was working perfectly in the morning, then when I rebooted my machine it no longer showed up.

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

My wd my book essential 1tb hard drive when conneted to power beeps for 20 secnds or so then the lighs just flash it will not show up on my mac or pc is there anyway to fix it?/

The disk-drive has malfunctioned.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive,
just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Unable to detect hard drive

try a different data cable for it or a different port to connect it to. also try to connect the drive to a different computer to isolate what exactly is causing the problem.
