The enclosure may not have a working drive inside, or the drive may not be formatted with NTFS or FAT 32.

First make sure you have the correct USB drivers for your phone installed on your pc. Go to device manager and see if your phone or mass storage device is listed. If not, download the drivers here, http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads. Make sure debugging on your phone is enabled. Please refer to the following:

  1. To set the Samsung Galaxy S2 to USB Mass Storage (MSC) mode, go into "Settings > Applications > Development" and enable "USB debugging".

  2. Then drag the status bar down and tap on "USB connected".

  3. The "USB connected" screen with the large green Android icon will appear. Tap on "Connect USB storage".

A confirmation dialog box will appear. Tap "OK". The green Android icon will turn orange, indicating that the phone is now in USB Mass Storage mode and should now appear as USB disk drives in "Devices with Removable Storage" and be assigned drive letters.

Every time i plug in my sony camera to the usb port to upload my pictures, my camera will say " usb mode. connecting to mass storage" then that will go away after a few seconds and then it...

Hi,

The "USB mode" and "Connecting to Mass Storage" message will get displayed when the Camera is connected to the Computer and is recognized by the Computer as a Mass Storage device. This is not an error message and is a normal operation.
You can change the Mass Storage settings in the Camera (depends on the model) The USB Select or USB Connect option in the Camera can be changed to PTP, Mass Storage or PictBridge mode. Set the option in the Camera to PTP and connect it to the Computer and check if the Computer is recognizing the connection. Once the computer is recognized, it appear as a removable Drive.
You can transfer the images from the Camera to the Computer from the Removable Drive by copying and pasting.

Thanks for contacting FixYa.

Probably the hard drive is dead. Did you drop it recently? Anyway, it could be just the connector, if your good with hardware you could open it and check. I would suggest you to use the warranty though.

How do I get it operational on a new computer?

Assuming that you are using Windows XP.
  1. Ensure that your computer is turned on
  2. Plug the one-pin power connector to the back of the hard disk enclosure
  3. Connect the other end to the power adapter
  4. Plug the power adapter into the wall outlet.
  5. Plug the large end of the USB cable into an available USB port on your computer
  6. Plug the smaller end of the USB cable into the USB connection on the hard disk
  7. Windows should detect a "USB Mass Storage Device" and automatically install all of the necessary drivers for it (This could take as much as 2 minutes).
  8. To ensure proper setup, you may have to restart your computer.

To remove the drive
  1. Ensure that you aren't currently accessing any of the files that reside on the hard dis.
  2. Right click on the Windows unplug or eject hardware icon in the System tray in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
  3. Select to eject the disk corresponding to the external hard drive
  4. Unplug the USB connector once you have been instructed to do so

> functioning properly

Means only that the plug-and-play hardware has been recognized, and that the correct device-drivers have been loaded. It says _nothing_ about the physical condition of the Maxtor.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

First of all try changing the usb port you are using I am sure that there will be more than one usb ports in your PC. After this try using another similar USB device.
I mean if you are trying to plug in a Flash drive use a different one or If you are trying to connect an external Hard Disk (as it is obvious from the mass storage device marked with an x as you have pointed out). Try using a different External Hard Disk that you may borrow from someone checks will help you locate the problem. The reason why your USB device is not being detected by your PC must be the driver of the USB drive is out dated. Check the version of the USB Is it 2.0? or the driver might have been corrupt.
You can download USB Mass storage driver from the following site. You can search for USB drivers on other sites also.

Best of Luck!

Make sure the camera is on and pc is selected on the camera screen when connected to the computer. You will need to have PC highlighted and select ok on the camera as this starts the camera and computer to communicate. Once communication established the LCD screen of the camera goes dark and the computer should generate a removable disk drive. Check the System Tray (lower right corner beside the PC time) for Safely Remove Hardware. When you click on it, it should read "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device Drive ?:" If you dont see that, then check the Device Manager to see if the camera is recognized as USB Mass Storage Device. The camera uses the driver usbstor.
