Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My Kenmore 90 Series electric dryer makes a humming noise when I push the start button. It heats up, run for a short while, then stops. Before it stops there is a clicking noise like a circuit or safety switch clicks the dryer off and theres a burned smell like the motor or a belt is burning. Then when you try turning it on again, it just makes a humming noise and don't spin. Is it the motor or what could it be? Please help, thanks.

Do you have access to a Multi-meter, to test Ohms, power, and continuity of various circuts?... If you do have access to this, do you know ow to use it?... I ask this so I can dfecide the best way to describe the diagnosis and ultimately he repair. It might not be your motor... and it MIGHT be your motor. I would check all the thermostats safety switches located inside the electrical heating coil, the but from the "clicking" and "humming" sound you get when it clicks off, I am more in agreement with you on the cursory diagnosis that it may well be your motor.... How old is the machine? can yo tell me the exact make nd model number as well as the year it was manufactured, I will need to download he wiring diagram for your particular machine.

Thank-you for answering my email t5o you.

    Sincerely,

There's possibilty that the bearing is going bad. It would cause the belt to slide alittle when the drums starts to turn. The strain on the motor because of the bad bearing can cause the motor overload and shut down until it cools, then it can be restarted.

You have a "Dead Spot" in your Motor...When you rotate the drum you move it from the dead spot and it continues to run as normal.
If you want to solve that problem then you will need to replace the motor...otherwise just live with it.

When you push start button, it makes noise but won't start.

This is a A.C. hum that you are hearing. this is a warning sign. You are experiencing motor failure. the actual windings inside of the motor are losing their potential to hold an even current due to breakage. the shutdown is a safety feature built in the control panel to prevent electrical spark/fire.

Kenmore Dryer 90 Series will start but suddenly stop...

Hello , Sounds like your motor is over heating , it will run until the sensor shuts it down from getting to hot , it is most likley because the motor is covered in lint and needs cleaned. Hope that helps.

Kenmore Dryer 90 Series will start but suddenly stop...

what starts and stops? the entire dryer or maybe the drum? Do you do anything to make it restart other than pushing the start button? This initially sounds like a temperature switch is opening and resetting after it cools. If you can describe the problem a little more in detail it would help.
