If disc does not spins, it will be not the fault of laser unit. There is a motor, that called 'sled motor' that spins the disc. It will start to spin disc as soon as we insert the disc, and after that the laser unit will track the disc and read it. It is a common fault that, this sled motor gets damaged. There are mainly two resons for this trouble. The fist one is the trouble with this motor itself, as i descrbed above. The second one is, the IC mistake. There will be an IC to drive both this sled motor and loading motor, which drives the disc tray in and out. One IC is used as drive for these two motors. If this IC gets damaged, or burned out, the motor will not run. Moreover, fi the loading disc is not done properly, due to a loose loading belt, after insertion of disc, the main sustem IC will not get any disc in signal from the mechanism, and won't give command to the loading motor control IC, thus no voltage will be applied to the motor.
You just do one thing first. Check the 'sled motor' first. For that you have to take the mechanism out of the unit. It will turn even with the voltage that the multimeter applies to it for reading its resistance. Take an analogue multimeter, set it to Ohms range, and touch its two leads to the motor leads, as we do to measure its resistance. It must run; and will. If not it is faulty, and sohould be repalced with similar one. It is a high speed stepper motor. Anyway; just replace it. It is good. It won't cost more. Check if the loading belt of the mechanism is loose or not. Replace it also. Do these and inform me the result by Fixya. I'm ready to assist you more. OK.

I don't know whether you have tried the reset function of the player or not. Anyway, try reset it to its factory settings, and ensure that also not helps you to retify the probelem, only after doing this, replace the motor or further repair. If you haven't tried the reset function, do the following to reset it.
[1] Press DISPLAY/FILE when the player is in STOP mode.
[2] Press Up/Down button to select SETUP and then press enter.
    The options for setup appears.
[3] Press Up/Down button to hilight RESET and then press enter.
[4] Select YES using UP/DOWN button. Press enter.
All the settings will enter to its original factory settings. Caution; Do not press power button while resetting the player as it will take a few seconds to complete.

If so it will be the fault of its system section. Auto reset function is faulty. Whe we insert a disc and eject it, each time this function resets the system memory to its orginal state. Confir it, by resetting the player once more to factory rest I described to you. The play a disc. The eject it. If the same thin happens, be sure that this is the fault. To detect and get its fault, you must have to go to its system control and msmory section; whiich need more care and knoledge about the circuit. OK

My Sony DVP-CX995V quit playing DVD's. I was listening to a CD, stoped it, went to menu, picked a DVD and bow it say's " Cannot Read Disc " On ALL of My DVD's. All CD's & DVD's are storebought. I've had...

does the spindle motor even try and spin the disk? Pop the top (8 screws) and watch the loader grab a disk and place into transport. The disc should immediantly start to spin and the little laser should scoot back and forth looking for something. If the disc never spins but the laser is moving, you may have a bad motor, or a bad pickup (transport mechanism includes motor and laser pickup). A replacement for this model is about $125 but you can get the same part out of a cheap DVP-S360 for about $20 on ebay. Just make sure you ask if it works before you buy it on BOTH CD and DVD as its 2 different lasers in that part.

I need to view the parts manual. The disc loads the motor turns but the disc does not spin. Is there a clutch so the disc can run free. What is the part number? Where can I buy it?

The motor isn't necessarily faulty. It could be a fault in the circuit board, or even the laser not reading the disk, so the player doesn't know it should be spinning the disk.

Sony 5 changer dvd player won't work. displayed code 31

This may be caused by one or two causes. The laser pickup assembly is bad or the most common failure for DVD and CD players is the spindle motor. This motors bushings fails over time and does not spin the disc at the right speed so the unit times out. You can repair the by purchasing what sony calles the Mech Assembly it comes with new laser and stepper motor as well as the Spindle motor.

DVP-NC800H/B trys to spin up disc, aborts, retrys ... eventually aborts. Motor or laser unit? How can I get the part number for replacement?

Trust me ,you do not want to replace that part / motor or laser. The adjustment procedure after replacement is a nightmare for even a good Technician.Buy a new one.

Sony DVP-NC600 Multi-disc DVD Player No Disc Error

The only other thing I can suggest, having repaired many Sony CD/DVD players, is to get a can of compressed air and try to blow any dust out from the laser assembly. Since you've already cleaned the lens (the most common problem), you also might have dust down inside the assembly. Try blowing with the air nozzle down inside, around the gap between the lens and the cover surrounding it. Do it from at least a couple of inches away, if the air is too powerful you can damage the wiring inside the assembly.

If this fails to correct the problem, your laser output may have diminished over time and the only repair is to install a new laser assembly. The cost of this part will most likely not be worth it to you since the unit is quite old now.

Suddenly "cannot play this disk" on Sony DVD/CD..every DVD...CD's work!

I have the same problem. I have a 5 year warranty from the company I purchased the unit from. I am not sure if they will replace it or not. I am reluctant to buy another one with this known issue. We have enjoyed the unit for nearly 3 years with no issues.
