Question about Sony RDR-VX515 DVD Recorder/VCR

1 Answer

I have hundreds of very valuable and irreplaceable DVDs made on this machine which although "finalized" will only play on this machine and on no other. The machine is now broken- they say the DVD transport mechanisms and motherboard have failed and have to be replaced- but no replacement parts are available. I would pay a considerable amount to get a replacement machine but none are available. Name of machine: Sony videocassette recorder dvd recorder RDR VX515 made in USA

You could buy one on E-Bay. Click on the link below, but if you really finalized the DVDs, they should play on other components.
The Sony like yours below is $149.95 and you can buy it now, not bid on it as normally done on e-bay.
Last resort you can take them to a video transfer service, so all is not lost.

I noticed the Sony mentioned above has apparently sold just since this posting and maybe is the reason you rated not helpful, however if you look on E-bay often, there are other Sony RDR-VX515 available from time to time you can possibly obtain. Also a video transfer service can help with reading DVDs. Look locally for this service.

A video transfer service cannot help, since all computers and other DVD players say that the DVDs do not exist: NO DISC. Only the machine that produced the DVDs can play them. The machine indicated that it had finalized the discs, but who knows? Maybe this was the defective step.

A video transfer service can read a DVD sector by sector to recover the data. It does not work the normal way a component would read a DVD. If you check with a good video copying service they should be able to recover the info.

I tried video copying services in Thailand with no luck. Is there a good video copying service in Pasadena CA or in the Los Angeles area?

I had played back a dvdr and when I ejected from my don't am dvdr201, it said I needed to finalized. Mid way through the finalization, it stopped and gave me a c13:00 code disc access error. Now it will...

A disk who is not finalised, should be readable on the computer you tried to burn it. Please try it there.
Some programs, like NERO, (Not sure what version, because I'm not burning for a long time anymore) could finalise long after you forgot. Perhaps you again try to finalise.

I 'Finalized' the DVD but cannot play on another player

Does the machine record on to + or - DVDR?
If it does both try each type. Also try high quality discs, some of the cheaper types won't work. Try it on different speeds too.

Why can't l play DVD's recorded on this recorder on other player

DVDs come in different versions.
Try using the -R DVDs. Once your DVD recorder finalizes the DVDs they should on any DVD palyer.

Check your manual to find out the finalizing method for your DVD recorder.

I hope this solution is helpful. Let me know.

Lvc9016g

I have successfully made hundreds of play-able DVDs from my home video using this Liteon LVC9016G. Overall I like this machine although it is very quirky.

First, I can tell you the only DVD that can work is SONY DVD+R 120min / 4.7GB. NOTHING ELSE WILL WORK RIGHT. I have used some DVD-R: You can record on it since everything appears to work. The got-ya is you cannot play it at all. I am sick of this because I have re-used some tape but ended up with useless DVDs! Take my word for it, I have tried many media like Maxwell or Verbatin. These "other brands" are fine on the computer but not on this machine. I don't know what this machine can detect and see the differences in the media.

The good thing is that I was able to connect the DV port from my camcorder (Sony mini DV) to the dv port on this unit. Cable was not included so I bought one very cheap from eBay. This connection gives the best control as the LiteOn remote control can control the recording from camcorder to the DVD recorder and even make different menu items. This is not a published feature but I figured out. As I said I have made hundreds of home video on this unit and it is very nice (when it works.)

Hi,
are you trying to play DVDs from a different region ?
PC DVD Drives, are region set to the computer, if you have a region 1 dvd drive, trying to play region 2 dvds et,c. it won,t let you. theres a couple of ways around this. go to Afterdawn ( on the web ) and download a region free dvd device.
Solution 2. try to obtain any updates or re-install windows media player. suggest player version 9 or above.

Mike @ compurepair.

p.s finally is to check that your drive, indeed supports DVD Or certain types of dvd media. i.e DVD+ Or DVD- some only support One type.

Samsung DVD-V$357 recorded dvds won't play on other machines

Did you finalize the disk? If not, this should solve your problem. When the disk is finalized you should be able to play it on your computer if you can play other DVDs on it. Some other DVD players can only play specific disks (i.e. DVD-R, DVD+R). This may be another problem.
