Directv DVR vs Tivo

I just upgraded my Directv to HD and thus had new HD-DVR's installed. My old DVR's were also from Directv, but they were Tivo.

One of the features of Tivo I used frequently was that you could hit the Live TV button on the remote and switch between the 2 built in tuners. So you could be watching a show on one channel and then hit Pause when it went to a commercial. You could then hit the Live TV button to switch to the other tuner and watch a different channel, and when it went to a commercial hit Pause, and then hit Live TV to switch back to the other channel which would still be paused where you left it, and then you could fast forward through the commericals. So you could easily bounce back and forth between the two tuners. My new Directv DVR doesn't have a Live TV button, and I can't figure out a way to do this, but am hopeful there is a way of doing this since there are essentially 2 tuners in it like my old Tivo, both capable of recording simultaneously.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thx!

I found the manual for that model online, and according to it, the "Live TV" button should function exactly the same way your old Tivo did.

If it's not working correctly, you may want to contact the manufacturer, assuming it's still under warranty.

Will a dvr/tivo built for direct tv convercablet to a cable tv service with a cable card from suddenlink its a sd80 tivo dvr mfg 2004

Unfortunately, DIRECTV TiVo DVRs will work ONLY with DIRECTV. They cannot be modified to work with cable.

However, there are many TiVo boxes that do work with cable and they are as low as $99. See, for example:

Can I use my HR22-100 Directv DVR as a standalone DVR with Comcast cable

No, that DVR is made to record programs that come off the satellite dish only, it doesn't have any video inputs. If you want a DVR, your best bet is to get one from Comcast.

II just want to ask a question about a TIVO DVR.

You can buy a used DirecTV with Tivo. You probably had a Hughes SD-DVR40 or SD-DVR80 before. The used model needs to be transferable to your account (which means it can't be leased, it has to have no outstanding charges on the previous account, etc). And you have to buy a new DirecTV card.

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area or in San Jose, write to [email protected] and they should be able to help you out.

TIVO HD DVR

OK, I had Dish network come out and install DVR HD. Had pixel des torsion viewing everything I recorded. They came out 3 time and replace DVR and check everything 3 time with no improvement. I had them remove everything.
I called Direct tv and they did the same thing. installed there dish and cables and DVR. Same problems. My question is? Is this the nature of this equipment or is there something they are missing.

HD TIVO

No, unfortunately non-HD tivo's cannot be upgraded to HD Tivos. However, a standard defintion Tivo can still be used with an HD television, at lower definition.

Off Air?

The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.

Tivo and direct tv

No, unfortunately there is not. That tivo only has 1 tuner, so you can only record or watch 1 live program. You can however watch a pre-recorded program while recording a live program. If you have directv, you can step up and get their hr20 dvr. It's not a tivo by any means, but it has 2 tuners so you can record 2 things at once and watch a pre-recorded show. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward.

You can also get an older DVR w/ tivo (hr10) however, it will not get ANY of the new MPEG4 High Def channels that are out there.

If you have an hdtv, then you really should grab an hr20, give directv customer retention a call and ask what they can do for you. You'll need a new slimline dish and they'll come out install it and everything you need for watching off the new satellites and enjoying the new mpeg4 hd channels (the old hd channels are in mpeg2).

Good luck.

Tivo Dtv

No, you need a regular directv receiver, or a directv w/ tivo receiver or a directv dvr.

Hi

Have questions about your upgrade? We've got the answers. What do I need to do to receive my upgrade? Nothing! Just make sure your DIRECTV HD DVR is continuously connected to your land-based phone line and you will receive the upgrade automatically. When will I receive my upgrade? The 6.3 software upgrade will roll out over a period of several weeks. Customers with more than one DIRECTV HD DVR may receive their upgrades at different times for each receiver. We appreciate your patience while we deliver these new and improved features to eligible DIRECTV HD DVR customers nationwide. Are all DIRECTV DVRs receiving this upgrade? No. DIRECTV DVR models SONY SAT-T60, PHILIPS DSR6000R and HUGHES GXCEBOT will not receive the 6.3 software upgrade. Other models received a similar upgrade, 6.2, in the past. I have a DIRECTV R10 DVR with 6.1 software. Will I receive this upgrade? No. The 6.1 software on the DIRECTV R10 DVR already includes the 6.2 features such as folders and faster menu scrolling. Will any of my DVR settings be changed as a result of the upgrade? Yes, some of your settings or preferences will be changed back to the factory default settings as a result of the upgrade. What happens if I don't have my phone line plugged into my DIRECTV DVR? You will not be able to receive the upgrade if your DIRECTV DVR is not connected to your phone line. To install the upgrade, your receiver must successfully make a call to our servers. How will I know when I have received my upgrade? You'll receive an on-screen message the first time you visit DIRECTV Central after your upgrade is complete. It will also appear in your Messages section.
