Direct from Dell by clicking this link, otherwise part number is: W5389

Testimonial: "I found this useful. But I was told that the Dell 1710n Printer is a rebadged Lexmark E232 Printer and therefore uses 30k Drum Kit 12A8302. Correct?"

Looking at the part number you provided for the Lexmark, the drum unit does look the same. If the 1710N truly is a re-branded Lexmark E232, then the Lexmark part might work also work in the printer.

Personally, if what you have is a Dell, I'd buy one using the Dell part number just to be safe. There may be slight modifications made to the PCU so that it will only fit in the brand it is designated for.

My dell 1720 laser printer has 3 black marks down the right side of the printer

Replace the photo conductor unit. It's the pc kit. The drum is damaged. Check to see if it has any silver aluminum showing. This is caused by excessive toner in the waste compartment of the PC Kit.

Photoconductor kit? Dell 1700 printer

The photoconductor kit is another word for the drum or imaging drum. All three words refer to the same part.

Here is a link from the Dell site for this model.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=dhs&sku=310-5404

Once you replace the drum, the printer has to be manually reset. If this is not done, the printer will continue to give this print out. By resetting it, the counter is set back to zero. The drum is good for around 30k prints.

From the Online Manual for the 1700, to reset the counter:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1700n/en/index.htm#online_documentation

To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

NOTICE: Resetting the imaging drum's counter without replacing the imaging drum may damage your printer and void your warranty.

I change the ink cartage and get the message "the printer has stopped because the photoconductor kit has reached the end of its useful life" what does that mean

The Drum which is a separate part has reached it's end of life. WHen you pull out the toner cart, you press a little button that separates it from the drum. that drum also comes out. You can tell it's the drum becuase of the green roller. You can go to support.dell.com for info on removing the drum if you don't have the manual.

*Note* When you replace the drum, there is a procedure for resetting the drum count. The printer doesn't actually know you replaced the drum. You basically have to tell it. Now this trick will get the printer working right now with the old drum. However, you still need to get it replaced.

THis link will tell you how to replace the drum and reset the count. The directions are for the 1720, however, it will work for the 1710 as well.

there are two parts to the copy of this machine, one is the photo conductor (drum, green cylinder ***'y) and the toner which fits in the drum ***'y.
you replaced the drum but you need to replace the toner as well (low toner)
then turn off and hold the start key an dturn on to get into service mode, scroll to reset photo count, select.

1710n Printer - poor print quality

You need to inspect your drum unit as well. If you can line up the marks on your page with the drum then you will need to replace the drum unit. If you donot find any problem with the drum unit then check the fuser unit on the back of the printer. Be very careful when checking the fuser since it is EXTREMELY hot. Good Luck
