You have a bad water valve it needs to be replaced. You will have to buy a new valve.

Possibly either a control board or maybe a pressure sensor problem not sensing the level so it will continue to fill

My washing machine fills up with water but does not continue the wash cycle. Sometimes when you slam the lid the washer will continue the wash cycle to the end. Other times the washer stays filled up...

Sounds like the lid safety switch is either out of adjustment, or needs replacement.

Most washers will fill with the lid open, but no continue a cycle where the drum or agitator spin, unless it senses the lid is closed.

My maytag home top loading washing machine over fills with water, ie. the switch to stop filling and start washing doesn't go off. I can drain it by setting it to spin.

top loading machines comes with a pressire switch to determine the water level.IT will fill with water till the switch is triggered to stop filling and continue with the next task of washing. there would be a rubber hose connected from the wash bucket to the pressure switch. Check for broken, leaking, bitten by rats hose or probably the switch it self is faulty, which is rather rare.

The washing machine starts ok and fills with water. However, it quickly begins to intermittently cut in and out whilst filling with water. It does this for a while before stopping completely. I've tried...

you did not mention the type of machine but for top loader the most probable cause of your issue is the door /lid switch that is in need of adjustment as most top loaders will fill with the lid open but cycle cant start or continue when the wash thinks the door is open this is a safety feature

Fill Fault appears during wash cycle.

Is the filter in the hose where it screws onto the tap clean?, if this is okay then most likely the valve.

Washing machine continues to fill when starts

If it fills with water and starts the cycle and the water keeps running in then your water inlet valve on the back where the water supply comes in is sticking. It needs replacing.

Water continues to fill after it should have

first does it over flow.if not pull your drain hose up from the drain till it is aleast the same level as the back of the waher control panel.
If the Drain hose is to far down in the pipe this will cause the water to drain out by gravity.the other least likely problem is a bad fill pressure switch.

Washing machine refills after spin cycle

Can you hear the pump running if not the machine may be syphoning out, if the outlet is into the down pipe too far this can cause it to syphon. The outlet should only be into it by about 6". The machine will fill with more water on the rince than the wash cycle that will cause the problem. If you can hear the pump running the machine mite be over filling there may a blockage in the presure system if you take the lid off (making sure the powers turned off) you will find a round switch with a thin hose comming off it tace the hose and you should find a small bottle this may be blocked. Hope this helps you.
