Dear Fixya Team, I have a problem in my LG flatron F700B 17 inch CRT monitor. My monitor was connected to an external TV card. The adapter of the TV card was defective and my brother plugged in the direct...

The "IC" (Integrated Circuit but often called a "chip") you have been told to be the problem, is a generic diagnosis. There are dozens (or more) of IC's in modern electronic appliances - including your monitor. ICs are what has allowed electronics to become miniaturized as they combine the functions of one or more circuits that may have needed large, bulky, heat producing vacuum tubes to something before that now is the size of a pin head. They look like these:

Drawing of the inside of an I.C. Actual I.C.

ICs come in all sorts of sizes and perform all sorts of different functions. Some are very common and cost significantly less than a dollar, while others are very specialized and cost hundreds or of dollars or more.

Since the power indicator of the monitor is lit, some or all of the power supply circuits are OK. Unfortunately, there are a great deal more circuits inside the monitor - one or more of which have failed.

Your repairer may have not even bothered to diagnose which IC had failed as the prices of monitors have been falling for so long, many people simply replace them with new, thin screen devices instead. If you wish to attempt the repair yourself, you should ask the repairer *which* IC has failed and then obtain it yourself to for replacement. Without the required knowledge and test equipment, knowing which IC to replace will be impossible to determine.

This is only an overview of the problem your monitor has. You will probably find that repairing the monitor is too time consuming and / or parts and other information about it are too costly or difficult to locate - or both. Good luck to you.

When first powered on the picture is very dark, returns to normal for 30-40 minutes and then has horizontal bars scrolling through the screen.

Your problem will be in the power supply of this TV. It will be the board that has the flyback transformer. You will have to pull this board out and find the vertical IC. I think it will be of the LA78XX series. You will have to resolder this IC, and don't exceed the solder. You do not want to weld the pins short. Next replace any and all capacitors near and next to this IC. Could be four caps you replace. As for the dark picture, you will have to inspect the rest of the power supply board for bad grounds (rings around the pins of capacitors, diodes, transistors, resistors and any other ICs mounted on heat sinks. Check your capacitors in the rest of the deflection area, and replace as necessary. Inspect those jumper jacks( that connect to the signal board), these will almost always need resoldering. Now the the other half of the the TV will have a signal board. The signal board will need the convergence IC resoldered. The IC will be of the STK-392-110 series. Solder these pins and do not short them with excess solder. This area will also, sometimes, provide the dim picture you describe. Inspect the board for any and all grounds. Be sure there are no rings around any component soldered here as well. And once again, inspect the jumper jacks (connects the two boards together) and resolder as necessary. Seems like a lot to do and there is. I hope this will help you with the start of repairs. Thanks for asking and show all hands of support!

I have an rca ctc186/7 series tv and it has no sound. We tried cleaning it, hooking other speakers to it and hooking up a dvd player and still no sound.

The audio output Ic inside your tv has damaged, or it doesn't get proper voltage. You just open your TV, and locate the audio output Ic. It can be located by following the speaker wires. Usually it will be screwed onto a heatsink. Check the input voltage with the help of a multi meter, af it is there, the Ic is damaged. Replacing it will solve the problem. If there is no voltage, follow the supply track and find out the opened circuit point. Usually a small value resistor, say 0.01Ohms in value, will be connected in series with the power supply to Ic. If it gets opened, there will be no supply to Ic, resulting no sound. If the audio outpu Ic get short this resistor will open. So keep in mind that, if this resistor is opened, there may be a short inside the output Ic, or come capacitors fitted with this supply line, after the reistor. Check the also for any short. keep a keen look at the solderings fo the leges of this output Ic. Some loose, or bad solderings also may be there. Anyway, your TVs audio output section is faulty. Find the reason and rectify it. If audio Ic is found defective, desolder it out from the board, and replace it with a same type and number. Ok

Need vertical ic replaced and capasitors. do

Don, who says you need the vertical ic replaced? Although you are to the point as to where the problem is. I think the ic is ok. The ic is a 7 or maybe a 9 pin component. In some cases it could be 13 pins. If you are sure where the location is, it is mounted to a large heat sink. I am not real sure of mitsubishi location scheme . If you can find it, most of the time pins 3 and 4 will be shorted. Measure to be sure. I think it is good. Look real close at the pins. They may have rings around them..resolder these making sure not to use to much solder. They should make contacts between pins. Now examine the four or maybe 5 capacitors with corresponding numbers. replace them with exact values. Use High Temp 105 degree ones. If you decide to replace the vertical ic, removed the clip around it. It will be the LA78--- series, cross it with an NTE replacement. see your electronic store for parts.
