I am unable to find a photo of your laptop's keyboard, so I cannot be certain which function key will enable your wireless adapter.

However, most laptops are very similar, so this solution should work for your problem.

1) Locate the secondary function key (probably labeled "FN") on your keyboard.
2) Locate the key which controls your wireless adapter as a secondary function. It will have the following image on the key: http://cdnsupport.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Phantom/WirelessIcon.gif
3) While holding the FN key, press the wireless key
4) Your wireless adapter is now enabled. If you are still having wireless issues, the problem was not that the hardware wireless adapter was disabled.

Where is the on off button for wireless

Use the "function" ('FN') keyboard on the motherboard: hold it down, and press one of the 'F1' through 'F12' keys.

Or, look on the case for a slider-switch (on/off).

Look for a lamp (BLUE when wireless is enabled, ORANGE when wireless is disabled).

It is possible to accidentally bump the button and turn off the wireless service. c02230159.jpg On most computers, there is an LED light that glows blue when the wireless device is turned on and enabled, and glows orange when off or disabled. Some newer models use different a different color scheme, see the user guide for more information. To turn on and enable the wireless device, do the following:
  1. To turn on the wireless device, simply move the switch to the on position. On some computers, the switch is actually a touch point on the panel above the keyboard.
  2. To enable the wireless device, right-click the HP Wireless Assistant (disabled) icon c02448899.jpg and select Open Wireless Assistant . Click Turn On . The HP Wireless Assistant (enabled) icon c02448900.jpg will display.

Wireless adapter has been shut off evidently on Compaq Presario ... is there a function combination that turns it on? Thanks!!!

Reinstall driver of your wireless adapter first. Just to eliminate the possibility of software issues. Check for the wireless switch of your wireless adapter. Usually it is located infront of the laptop or on the side. Make sure that it is in ON position. Look for the icon in the switch that has a computer with wave signal on the side. Thats the indicator that the wireless is in ON position. Lastly, you can use function keys to enable/disable wireless card. You may press Fn + F5 (depends on the keyboard, computer with wave signal on the side) to toggle on/off wireless adapter.
