Won't heat any foods.

you have a problem with your magnetron tube, and when the magnetron tube goes bad, the diode almost always goes out with it. you should be able to order a replacement tube from your manufacturers website, if you cant let me know and ill try to help you more.

here are the steps to replace the magnetron tube, if you want to do it yourself that is. if you have a professional do it, it can be pretty costly.
  1. Unplug Microwave at least few hours before
  2. Remove Microwave from above oven range by somebody holding Microwave from ground unscrew the screws from cabinet
  3. Remove top cover of Microwave
  4. Make sure to keep screws correctly in a place you remember what goes where
  5. Make sure capacitor is discharged, GE manual inside Microwave says capacitor will discharge within 30 seconds once it is off. As a precaution check the voltage in capacitor to make sure there is no electricity
  6. Remove other panels around magnetron part
  7. You need to remove lot of connecting wires, should be careful to note down what goes where
  8. If possible take digital photos to refer back when you put everything back together
  9. You may need to remove transformer to easily remove and replace Magnetron. If you can't remove Magnetron easily then remove bottom panel of the Microwave and remove transformer
  10. Now it should be easy to remove magnetron
  11. Replace new magnetron and screw it. We had to put one outside part from old magnetron to new one because new one was missing that. Check to make sure both old and new one are exactly the same
  12. Make sure put all wires properly back
  13. Now put transformer back and screw it
  14. Put capacitor panel in place and screw it
  15. This might be a good time to test the Microwave to make sure it works fine now
  16. Now cover the top panels and start to screw everything
  17. Once everything assembled put the Microwave back above range put screws from top

I have a GE Spacemaker Microwave, Model # JVM165OCB006 Serial # TF900232B Manufactured 10/2003. Runs, turntable, light, timer etc but will not heat. Is it worth fixing?

it is mostly fault of magnetron tube inside Microwave. ge has a 10 year warrenty on this part and they can fix it for you for 200$ OR you can order the part from the web and install it yourself. when the magnetron goes out, the diode almost always goes out too so you'll need another of those too. so if you dont want to replace these then buy a new one if not the the steps to repairing are:

  1. Unplug Microwave at least few hours before
  2. Remove Microwave from above oven range by somebody holding Microwave from ground unscrew the screws from cabinet
  3. Remove top cover of Microwave
  4. Make sure to keep screws correctly in a place you remember what goes where

  6. Remove other panels around magnetron part

  8. If possible take digital photos to refer back when you put everything back together
  9. You may need to remove transformer to easily remove and replace Magnetron. If you can't remove Magnetron easily then remove bottom panel of the Microwave and remove transformer

  16. Now cover the top panels and start to screw everything

Changing interior light on GE jvm1790

1. Unplug Oven
2. Unscrew 2 screws on top front of oven
3. Pull of front vent (might need a little force the
first time but not to much or you will crack
plastic)
4. Unscrew screw facing you near the front that is
attached to metal plate on bottom of opening
behind the vent.
5. Pull out metal plate (box) carefully not to
damage any wires.
6.Bulb is in this metal box, pull out old one and
press the new one's prongs into holes (be
careful and gentle the bulb breaks easily,
don't try to pull it back out to see if it's all
the way in or you will most likely pull a
prong out of the bulb)
just firmly press bulb
into place.
6. Screw metal plate back in place.
7. Plug in oven and test bulb.
8. Unplug oven again and put vent back on with
the 2 screws.
9. Plug in, set clock and your done.

The first time I opened it up was to look for the bulb. The vent needed a little pulling to come off. The second time (to put in new bulb) it came off easier and whole thing took about 5 minutes.
Hope this helps.
Just in case: I am not a professional nor claim to be. This is based on my own experience. Yours may differ. Unless you feel totally comfortable you should contact a licensed electrician or an authorized service agent.

Mw oven totally dead. 2 year old panasonic

No sorry there is none... look what usually happens is the magnetron, or high power diode, or Oower Supply goes faulty, a magnetron can cost between $95 - $150, or more...and usually that is NOT the only part that will/would need replacing. Cut your losses, and get a firm "Quote" from a repair center, or get a new one, with a 5 year Warranty.

it is just behind the front top grill on the right. The plastic grill that goes accross the entire top of the front of the unit. Then behind it on the right is a small power board that has the ceramic fuse on it.
remove 2 srews from top of microwave that hold the top of this plastic grill in place.
Then slide the grill to the left or right (I don't remember which way). Now the grill will come out.

The fuse is usually the secondary issue. Most often, it is the cavity TCO that goes out. This is the thermo-coupler that breaks the main power circuit if the inside of the mocrowave gets over 100 degrees C. requires taking the unit down and taking the cover off.

GE Spacemaker Profile X1800.

I would take out the grills and boil them, but cannot see how to do that.

Also, the GE stove top (Model JGSP44BEY) has so much baked on crud that I may never use it. I poured a whole bottle of easy off onto it and still cannot loosen it all. Same goes for the removable parts from the burners.

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it has a hood thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
