Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a dell dimension 8300 about 7 years old and it is making noise that I'm thinking may be the hard drive (maxtor7Y250mo). I'm no computer guy, so I'm trying to determine what to replace it with I was considering a WD Caviar Black; or Green 2TB ? Any thoughts? I put in som additional RAM a few years ago so I'm not leary about taking out and putting in new hard drive. It's all the software reinstall. My OS is XP.

I prefer the Caviar Black, but most of all am very supportive of your going with Western Digital. They have the best and most generous support to direct consumers of all the HD manufacturers. I've received several replacement drives for ones that failed under warranty over the years for customers without a hitch. There warranty site is easy and quick to use and they are lightning fast at getting your drive to you.

I bought 4 G of memory, dell pc tuneup and external hard drive total over $400 from Dell in August. Sales guy from Dell told me it will work like NEW! I am having MAJOR problems last 2 days...Dell won't...

If your computer still works with its internal hard drive, I would say the issue is with the external drive. Try to backup data, then run check disk on it with the option to repair/fix errors it finds. If no luck, try to completely reformat it. If the external drive was purchased as new August of this year, it should have its own warranty of at least a year. This means, if it is faulty, you can get a warranty replacement for it. Just provide the order number or sales invoice number for the drive as a proof of your purchase in the event that you need to get a replacement for it.

The hard drive wont intiialize I think it might be the mother board. how can I tell. it is a dell dimension 8300 computer

If you see the Dell BIOS flash screen, then the motherboard is likely working. Try the drive in another computer to test its integrity.

Computer makes a whining noise

most likely the fan in your power supply ... might be an auxiliary fan ... could be your hard drive.

In any event ... get yourself a good back up now in the unlikely event it is your hard drive.

I BOUGHT CHEAP RAM, EBAY, DELL DIMENSION 8300 HUMMING

This system supports ECC and non-ECC Rambus modules. ECC and non-ECC modules can be mixed but ECC feature will be disabled. Modules must be installed in pairs. multiple modules - PC800 the max is 2 GBs
systems tool...run disc clean up...put a check mark in every box, you don' need anything there as it is all copies you have elsewhere...
then defraggment also in system tools.
If you really feel like making that ole girl hum, do a complete reinstall using the latest drivers from the dell site. If you use your service tag number it will select the better drivers for your application.
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8100&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
go to this page for drivers (above) select your operating system (2000-ME-XP-Vista).
hope this helps you. Please leave rating
