You can increase the range of your router but you need to purchase another wireless switch. What you have to do is buy a wireless switch and grab a computer network cord and plug it into your 2wire modem. I would advise just turning your the 2wire's wireless off. If the new router isn't strong enough you can buy directional antenna's or larger antenna's which should help with the range issue.

Unfortunately you can't purchase an antenna that you can directly attach to the 2wire.

Make sure that the switch you buy has external antennas that you can change out. If not and the range isn't strong enough then it could cause more headaches down the road.

SOURCE: I ahve an AT&T 2Wire

Open the Command Prompt from the Accessories folder from all programs. Type "ipconfig" and hit enter. Note the Default Gateway ip setting - xxx.xxx.x.xxx. Enter this value in the URL address field of your browser and hit enter. This will open your modems settings page - read and select the page you need to change your values - such as the wireless power adjustment. There are some sections that will require a password to change - you or your ISP should know the password.

How do I boost the signal from an at&t 2wire dsl modem so that the signal will work better in some parts of the house.

for wireless signal 1st thing to consider is the EMI's (eletro-magnetic interference) anything that is near that modem that produces static electricity, radio frequency and magnetic energy (eg. cordless phone, speaker, anything electronic...) isolate the modem at-least 6 feet away from this said EMI's.
2nd you may check on the the wirelss settings on your modem's GUI(interface) see the link:http://support.2wire.com/index.php?page=view&article=60
wireless channel and power settings and the only once you should change... channel such as 1,6,7 are sometimes used by other device (wireless phone, neighbor's router) power settings: as you place it on a higher number it gives longer distance but gets thinner space(area)
wireless1.jpg
consider the red signals as you place the power higher the signal gets longer but thiner.
lastly wireless doesnt penetrate walls/ glasses it only bounce back and forth to it... so less wall or interference the better chance of going directly to the access point...
if you really havea big house try consider buying wireless booster/repeater...

Cannot connect my dell laptop wirelessly, will connect with a wire and will connect wirelessly at the library. The old 2wire was ok but we replaced it with a new 2wire today. Have spent 3 hours with att...

Since you are able to connect using a hardwired connection and you're able to connect wirelessly at the library, that simply means that your computer and your internet browser are fine. where is your wireless computer and your wireless located? are there any possible wireless devices interfering with the wireless signal like chordless phones, cellphone, TVs, radios, microwave oven? are your walls in your house covered with metal plates coz that would really make the signal deteriorate. the settinngs on your wireless router may also need to be reconfigured and boost up the signal of the wireless router.if only i could remotely access your wireless router, I would really walk you thru on what to check on your wireless router

I have a 2wire 397 modem router from att in line ,i want to add another 2wire modem router in line to a different room to hook up a samsung 3d blu ray to go on the internet

you cannot have 2 modem routers on the same line, if your current modem router has wifi, you might consider using a wifi repeater that will pick up the signal elsewhere and give you added lan ports. alternatively, you could just run a lan lead to where your samsung is and use a 5 port lan switch.

Where do i find the area so I can up the strength of my modem

Hi Good Day,

In the wireless settings of the 2Wire device's user interface, there is an option to boost the gain/signal. I think you can choose 1-thru-10 and it comes defaulted at 6. Keep in mind that the 2Wire modem/router is a cheap POS and diming it out may cause heat issues and earlier failure. I say "earlier" because it WILL fail sooner or later. Yes, it's a fact. wink.png Radio interference from outside sources will affect your usable range, so while you are in the interface, change the radio channel to 3. Most wireless systems are defaultly set for "auto", 1, 6, or 11. In my experience, channel 3 has the least interference from other wireless systems and 2.4GHz cordless phones.

yeah a better modem would be the easiest thing to do because it's clear that the one you've got is either not transmtting properly or is just the unit you'vee got has a fault in it

2wire gateway signal range problems

1. Put the router in the highest location possible in the house.
2. Make sure the gateway is installed in the center of the house rather than in a corner of house, so it will cover area on all sides.
3. Make Sure you dont have any devices that may interfere with the signal eg. cordless phone , close to the gateway.
4. Use channel 3 or 7.

Connecting 2wire modem./router to extra linksys router

to get this right you must make sure that the 2wire will be configured to be your gateway which means that the 2wire itself will be connected to the internet then set the linksys to DHCP mode because if you dont it will give you a router behind router error , make sure that the 2wire is properly authenticated and connected to the internet to make sure access the gui by typing gateway.2wire.net on your browser and run system set up wizard
