Question about Samsung SpinPoint T HD501LJ 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

I removed the samsung hd501lj from a buffalo drive enclosure and installed it in a windows xp machine, I can see the drive in disk management, but can't assign a drive letter

You need to prepare the drive for Windows. This unfortunately usually means reformatting. You should be able to tell it to reformat and prepare the drive from the disk management console if you right click on the disc.

I'm assuming you are on windows. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Select the Disk Management option on the left. Right click on the partitions you are missing a drive letter for and then select Change Drive Letter and Paths. That should let you choose the drive letter.

Buffalo ministation not auto-playing or showing in my computer


i have exactly the same problem with HD-PCU2 500gb ministation (Buffalo). i have also gone through the solution given by John Adams. i cannot find the device in disk management, therefore i cannot format the device...is it going to work again..please help

Windows 7 won't recognise buffalo hd-ce1.otu2


you might back up your data to another drive if possible

then format your buffalo drive then transfer it back

i have had similiar issues with xp and w7 using usb drives and have found that i have to designate certain usb drives to the computer running windows 7 and same running xp
if i try to use the one designated to windows 7 in my xp get this drive is not formatted do you want to format
although these drives are not buffalo just usb data drives but of large capacity 128GB
make sure the lead/s that attach to your hard drive are securely seated
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable


just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap

If the Buffalo had been formatted on a MAC their file format is HPFS and is not compatible with Windows. To be able to exchange data between the Mac and Windows the Buffalo external drive needs to be formatted on Windows XP in FAT 32 (not NTFS). Then the Mac can read and write data on this external drive as well as Windows XP.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Problem with buffalo 1tb external hard drive


If you're using windows XP then go to start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management > disk management. See if the disk is showing up there but hasn't been allocated a drive letter, if it hasn't then right click on that drive and press "assign drive letter". Be sure to do it to the right one, you could quite easily change another drive's letter by accident otherwise.

XP wont boot not recognising Sata hard disks


if you want to try and get to those files you have best buy another drive and load windows on it . then connect this drive using an external usb adapter/enclosure, not before , not during , only after windows is installed and then you may get to this drives data .if you have luck.
or purchase an enclosure and connect to another computer.
at most you should attempt on this drive is to boot windows and run a repair on the drive. even that can be risky without backed up data.

If neither computers detect it, which is a good form of process of elimination, I would test the cable with a known working. I would then extract the drive from the enclosure. And try mounting into a desktop machine as a slave, or find another enclosure.
